Guidelines for the Film Analysis paper

A. Film selection: Focus and theme:

1. Each student is asked to select a movie to be the focus for this paper.

2. Next, students are asked to research their film selection by focusing on the historical, cultural, political, and ideological settings for the selected movie.

3. Students are asked to select one male character that is the focus (primary role) in this movie and discuss a complete social psychological profile of this character.

4. Students are asked to select one female character that is the focus (primary role) in this movie and discuss a complete social psychological profile of this character.

5. Students are asked to select a character, male or female , that was ignored in the movie that should be the focus and discuss the reasons as to why this character played the invisible role in this movie.

6. Students are asked to select three sociological concepts discussed in class that are relevant to the selected movie and show how these concepts are used in this movie.

7. Students are asked to select one theory discussed in class dealing with gender dynamics in mass media and show how this theory is used in the movie

B. Preliminary Outline: Brainstorming :

1. This report should have the following parts:

a. Selected movie,

b. Brief summary of the movie,

c. Why select this movie? Relevancy,

d. The historical, social, political, and ideological context of the movie. Please make sure to use examples from the movie to support your answer,

g. Ignored male or female character analysis and why. Please use examples from the movie to support your answer,

h. Discussion of the three sociological concept, chosen by the student, and show how these concepts are used in the movie by using examples from the movie,

i. Discussion of the sociological theory, chosen by the student, and show how this theory is used in the movie by using examples from the movie,

j. Conclusion. Personal feedback and input about the selected movie.
