Guidelines for the Film Analysis paper

I. Introduction:

· The goal of this project is to give students the opportunity to examine the diverse images of masculinity, femininity, and sexual orientation as portrayed in the mass media with a focus on the film industry.

· The focus for this paper is to give students the opportunity to explore the diverse research methods used by sociologist to collect, interpret, and analyze collected data.

· The report typed with a 1 ½ inch margin, double-spaced with a length of 7-10 pages including tables, graphs, and references.

· All assignments are to be turned in on time using the guidelines/Rules for submission discussed in class and outlined in section C of part #2. Every time a student is late in submitting a portion of this paper, he or she will lose five points. Further, if a student fails to submit the first rough draft on time, their paper will not be accepted nor graded and the students will receive a failing grade for this assignment.

· Students are asked to select a movie from the list below to be the focus for this paper. Students are not limited to the list and new movies will be added to the list. The selected movie for this assignment has to be approved by me, especially, if it is not listed below.

· Proper documentation of direct quotes and paraphrasing used in this project to avoid plagiarism. If plagiarism discovered, a grade of “F” assigned for this assignment.

· Finally, critical due dates listed in the next sections. It is the responsibility of the students to follow and keep up with these essential due dates.

II. Detailed Steps: The Design and the Rationale:

A. Film selection: Focus and theme:

1. Each student is asked to select a movie to be the focus for this paper.

2. Next, students are asked to research their film selection by focusing on the historical, cultural, political, and ideological settings for the selected movie.

3. Students are asked to select one male character that is the focus (primary role) in this movie and discuss a complete social psychological profile of this character.

4. Students are asked to select one female character that is the focus (primary role) in this movie and discuss a complete social psychological profile of this character.

5. Students are asked to select a character, male or female , that was ignored in the movie that should be the focus and discuss the reasons as to why this character played the invisible role in this movie.

6. Students are asked to select three sociological concepts discussed in class that are relevant to the selected movie and show how these concepts are used in this movie.

7. Students are asked to select one theory discussed in class dealing with gender dynamics in mass media and show how this theory is used in the movie

B. Preliminary Outline: Brainstorming:

1. This report should have the following parts:

a. Selected movie,

b. Brief summary of the movie,

c. Why select this movie? Relevancy,

d. The historical, social, political, and ideological context of the movie. Please make sure to use examples from the movie to support your answer,

e. Primary male character analysis. Please make sure to use examples from the movie to support your answer,

f. Primary female character analysis. Please use examples from the movie to support your answer,

g. Ignored male or female character analysis and why. Please use examples from the movie to support your answer,

h. Discussion of the three sociological concept, chosen by the student, and show how these concepts are used in the movie by using examples from the movie,

i. Discussion of the sociological theory, chosen by the student, and show how this theory is used in the movie by using examples from the movie,

j. Conclusion. Personal feedback and input about the selected movie.

III. Important due dates: Please use the drobox located in the Film Analysis folder to submit the final portion of this assignment. Further, students are encouraged to submit their portion of this assignment using the individual folder for the purpose of editing and feedback. Below are the due dates for this assignment:

a. Movie selection, brief synopsis, and the relevancy portion is due by midnight on Friday (9-13-2019). DONE.

b. The historical, social, political setting of the movie portion is due on Friday (9-20-2019). DONE.

c. The primary male or female characters analysis portion is due on Monday (10-21-2019).

d. The ignored male or female character analysis portion is due on Friday (10-21-2019).

e. The discussion of the selected three sociological concepts relevant in this movie is due on Friday (10-25-2019).

f. The discussion of the selected sociological theory relevant in this movie is due on Friday (11-1-2019).

g. The first draft of this paper is due on Friday (11-15-2019).

h. The final report is due on Friday (12-6-2019).
