Guidelines for Tables and Figures

Among the class files of Week 8 is a sample file entitled “Style Sample for GW2 Paper Submission Shanghai.doc.” Strictly follow this sample.

The same document can also be a guide for other elements such as cover page, abstract, references and so on.

Below I explain the style elements for Tables and Figures.

Part A Inclusion

1. Do not place figures and tables in within the text

2. They are included in the every end of the paper, after the References

3. Figures go before tables

4. Each page has one figure or one table only; do not include two or more in one page

5. In the place within the text where a table/figure is supposed to be placed, insert a line there “Table x is about here.”

Part B Format (Table)

1. Each table needs a title, starting with Table x (such as Table 1, Table 2 and so on). The title refers to the substance of the cells (e.g., percentage of female politicians), with the information of the project name and, if possible, data source.

2. Each row should be clearly labeled; use longer phrases if needed

3. There should be no vertical lines

4. In each column, the number of digits after the decimal point should be the same

5. In each column, the decimal point should aligned

6. Use * for significant levels; note your convention below the table

7. Add other notes below the table if needed

Part C How to Make Them

1. The most common method is this:

a. Select useful information/numbers from the print out of Stata log files

b. Use Excel to draw Tables or Figures

c. Cut Excel and Paste-Special onto your Word file of the paper
