Capital IQ Research Project    Part 1: Company analysis:  

You have been assigned with two firms. For each firm:   a. Log into Capital IQ and search for firm data  

i. Find and download ratios to demonstrate each of the following for the past  five years (annual data):  

1. Growth   2. Profitability  3. Margin  4. Asset Turnover   5. Short Term Liquidity  6. Long Term Solvency 

ii. In a new workbook (name it as “Capital IQ Company Research Project ‐ your  name”), pull all of the corresponding data for each firm into one tab.   Rename each tab by the firm, e.g. “Apple”, etc.  

b. Analyze firm performance in the past five years.   i. Trends in revenue, EBITDA, and net income growth and explain significant 

difference in the trend, if any.   ii. Trends in the firm’s profitability, efficiency and leverage and explain 

significant difference in the trend, if any  iii. Use a DuPont analysis framework to explain why ROE increased or 

decreased or flatted during the past five years  c. Write your answers for section (b) into each company analysis tab of your “Capital 

IQ Company Research Project ‐ your name” workbook.      

Part 2: Industry Analysis:   You have been assigned with two firms. For each firm: 

a. Log into Capital IQ and search for firm data   i. Find and download key competitors’ data to demonstrate each of the 

following for the past two years (annual data):   1. Growth   2. Profitability  3. Margin  4. Asset Turnover   5. Short Term Liquidity  6. Long Term Solvency 

ii. In a new workbook (name it as “Capital IQ Industry Research Project ‐ your  name”), pull and organize all of the corresponding data for the assigned firm  and its competitors into one tab.  Rename each tab by the firm Competitors,  e.g. “Apple’s Competitors”, etc.  

b. Analyze competitors’ financial performance and compare to the assigned firm.  i. Identify the most important drivers of differences in ROA and ROE between 

the assigned firm and its competitors. To successfully address this question, 

 

you must identify measures of financial performance that drive the DuPont  analysis, e.g. profit margin, asset efficiency, leverage, etc. 

c. Write your answers for section (b) into each industry analysis tab of your “Capital IQ  Industry Research Project ‐ your name” workbook.
