·
The literary research essay is just a long analytical essay with more research. You may choose any poem, short story, or play in the textbook, and any analytical point we have covered over the course of our class. Remember, this essay is an analytical essay, not a summary; do not retell the story, but rather, assume your reader has read it. Check your calendar for the due date! Your essay should have the following components:
· Your essay MUST be 1250-1750 words (5-7 pages).
· You must have 3-5 secondary sources AND 1 primary source.
· Your essay MUST have an introduction, with a clear analytical thesis statement.
· Your essay MUST have body paragraphs with good development. You will need to use examples from the story to support your analysis. The references you make to the story (quotes, paraphrases, etc.) will need to be cited and documented.
· Your essay MUST be written in third person p.o.v.(for example: “One may interpret” or “The reader may realize”). You are NOT allowed to use first person (“I believe”) or second person (“You may think”).
· Write in the present tense, whether you are dealing with fiction, poetry, or nonfiction literature to discuss the actions and thoughts presented in the text. Do this because literature exists as a present phenomenon regardless of whether or not its author is alive.
· Your essay MUST have a conclusion that restates the main idea in an interesting way.
· You MUST have an MLA Works Cited page listing your primary source and all secondary sources, and you MUST use in-text parenthetical citation as well.
· For this assignment, a secondary source is one that discusses or analyzes your chosen text. Many academic journals contain articles that discuss short stories. You MAY get your secondary source(s) from the library databases (such as Gale Literary Databases, Academic Search Complete, Literature Resource Center, Gale Virtual Reference Library). You MAY use the open Internet as well, provided you check your sources for credibility. Secondary sources such as Shmoop, Cliff's Notes, SparkNotes, enotes.com, bookrags.com, 123helpme.com, Wiki anything, and exampleessays.com ARE UNACCEPTABLE.
NOTES AND REMINDERS:
