C. Epilogue: Learning (1 – 2 pages) 1. Learning point 1
(Describe the first thing that you learned about real‐world TV advertising from this project.)
2. Learning point 2 (Describe the second thing that you learned about real‐world TV advertising from this project.)
3. Learning point 3 (Describe the third thing that you learned about real‐world TV advertising from this project.)
Pointers – Through this project, you will have an opportunity to apply textbook materials to real‐world
advertising situations. Hence, it is very important to read textbook chapters related to this
guideline before starting this project.
– If you are not a subscriber of Hulu, sign up for a free trial on Hulu.com. Make sure to choose the plan with commercials. You can also subscribe to Peacock (basic plan) on peacocktv.com, which is
free of charge.
– Alternatively, you can choose two TV shows on traditional cable TV. Because there are more commercials per show on cable TV, you will learn more from this project by choosing cable‐based
TV shows.
– Hour‐long episodes on cable TV are typically listed as about 45‐minute ones on Hulu. This is because hour‐long episodes on cable TV usually includes about 15 minutes of commercials and
promos. Similarly, 30‐minute episodes on cable TV are listed as about 20 – 25 minute ones on Hulu.
In this guideline, cable TV durations (i.e., hour‐long and 30‐minute) are used to indicate the running
time of an episode.
– If you are going to watch TV shows on Hulu or Peacock, choose an hour‐long episode of each TV show for this project. Although hour‐long episodes are strongly recommended, you can choose two
30‐minute episodes of a TV show, instead of an hour‐long episode. Whether you use an hour‐long
episode or two 30‐minute episodes of a TV show, note that each TV show must include at least
10 UNIQUE commercials, excluding repeats, TV show promos, movie promos, PSAs, and political
ads. If an hour‐long episode includes fewer than 10 unique commercials, you need to watch
another episode of the same show to cover 10 or more unique commercials in your report.
– The two TV shows must be in different genres. The more different your chosen genres are, the more you will learn from this project.
– If you watch the same TV show on Hulu.com on different days, it is likely that you will see different commercials. For the purpose of this project, it is strongly recommended that you record the TV
MKT 4310 Fall 2021
7
shows and the commercials with your smartphone. Before recording, make sure that your
smartphone has enough battery and storage space.
– The best and worst commercials cannot be TV show promos, movie promos, PSAs, or political ads.
– Any two best or worst commercials cannot be the same. In other words, the four best and worst commercials in your report must be different.
– Do not underestimate the time that you will need to complete this project well, as you will write a long, detailed report. It is recommended that you start this project soon after Exam 2 and give
about three weeks to this project.
– If you use this guideline as a template, delete parentheses or brackets before adding your own content.
Notes Regarding Submission – This is an individual assignment, not a group assignment. – Each student should submit his/her report by November 30. An electronic copy should be
uploaded to the Assignments folder on D2L by 11:00 PM on the above due date. A hard copy
submission is not required.
– All parts of your report should be in one file. A multiple‐file submission will not be accepted. – The page limit for this assignment is 25 – 40 pages, including everything. – The following font and size must be used for main text throughout the report: Calibri or Cambria,
size 11.
– All pages should be double‐spaced and numbered with one‐inch margins on all sides. – Writing style should be “business.” In business writing, clarity and brevity are very important. But,
do not write a memo‐style report with lots of bullet points and incomplete sentences. Except
numbered bullets in 2. General Commercial Analysis, all sentences must be complete.
– Sloppy work will lower your grade. Correct any grammatical and syntax errors, typos, and inappropriate punctuations by proofreading multiple times. Proofread at least twice before
submitting your report.
– Do not afraid of using the service offered by the Writing Center on campus. I encourage every student to plan to use the service from the Writing Center for this project. Note that good writing
skills are one of the keys to success in the business world.
