Course Overview

In this 10-week virtual residency, learners apply writing, research, and critical-

thinking skills by identifying a problem, developing project questions, and

finalizing an appropriate project topic for the program. Learners use evidence

to support the selection of theories, problems, and questions to guide further

refinement of their topic. Learners establish an appropriate topic area,

preliminary project design, and begin development of a literature review.

Further development of the doctoral project is determined through a project

topic framework.

The Project Plan helps you develop the details of your project. Your work will be reviewed

through multiple lenses, including instructors, peers, the existing literature, and other sources. You should seek out opportunities to improve and refine your work. As you deepen your

understanding and add detail to your project, you should expect that you will make several revisions during and beyond this course. Doctoral project planning is an iterative process, with

each revision often inspiring further revisions until everything is aligned. These iterations are a necessary part of the doctoral journey.

To successfully complete this course, you must complete all assignments and demonstrate all course competencies at the level of Proficient or above for master's and doctoral-level

courses.

Synchronous Meetings

This course requires individual and small-group synchronous meetings. Please visit the Using Zoom page on Campus for more information.

 Prepare: Introducing Yellowdig

Introducing Yellowdig

This course uses a tool called Yellowdig to facilitate course discussions. Yellowdig provides an

interface that resembles social media platforms and makes it easy to participate in discussions.

A Yellowdig account has been automatically created for you. The first time you access a

Yellowdig discussion, you will be asked to acknowledge and confirm your account. Note: You will have the best experience using Yellowdig with the Google Chrome browser.

To learn more about using Yellowdig, visit Tools and Resources. You can also explore the Yellowdig Forums page on Campus.

If you have trouble getting connected to the Yellowdig discussion boards, contact Yellowdig Technical Support.

Grading in Yellowdig

Yellowdig uses a unique discussion points grading system. In this course, points will be given as follows:

Initial post of 50 or more words: 30 points.

Comment (response) of 30 or more words on another learner’s post: 30 points.

Additional points may be awarded by your instructor in the form of accolades (badges).

You can earn a maximum of 120 points each week. Once you reach that maximum, you can still continue your conversations on Yellowdig, but you'll stop earning points for the week.

Your final discussion participation grade will be based on the total number of points you have earned throughout the course. If you earn the maximum of 1,000 points possible for the

course, your final discussion participation grade will be 100%.

Checking Your Progress

To help you stay on track, Yellowdig calculates how many points you should try to earn each

week to ensure you finish the course with a top grade. You can find this information by clicking on the points dashboard area of Yellowdig (on the left-hand menu within the tool).

Your participation grade in your courseroom My Grades area will be updated by Yellowdig throughout the day. Each week it will account for the points you could accumulate that week

as well as the points you already have, so don't be surprised if your grade changes. You’ll get used to the pattern in a few weeks.

Instead, focus on the points displayed in Yellowdig. If you're hitting your maximum points each week, you're good. In fact, you are more than good! Aim for at least 100 points each week to

stay on track.

Using Yellowdig

Yellowdig is designed to take a less formal approach to discussing course content. Think of it

as a playground for ideas. We still expect you to use APA style for citations and references. However, we want you to focus on writing short, succinct posts about the course content

rather than lengthy essays.

Try to start a conversation on the new topics you learn each week. Also, share additional

resources with one another to help everyone better understand and explore new ideas.

This is an environment designed to give you flexibility and control. Take advantage of that to

learn in the manner best suited to you.

Yellowdig Features

You can like or love each other’s posts.

Discussion

Preparing for Topic Endorsement

As you begin developing your Project Plan in this course, choose one of the following for your

discussion post this week:

Post a link to an article you read, share something from your profession or job, or provide

another source of inspiration that generated your topic idea. What do you hope to accomplish with your project?

The Finding an EBSCO Persistent Link Campus resource may be useful in finding an article for your post.

Discuss issues related to your topic that other researchers have reported in the literature.

How does your topic fit into the field of study?

Discuss areas in which you anticipate wanting more support as you develop your plan for endorsement. What types of resources would be helpful, or have you found resources

shared by your peers that provide value to your work?

As we wrap up the first week, share your questions about endorsement requirements on which you require more information. How might you get your questions answered?

Response Guidelines

As you respond to your classmates, share your ideas, experiences, and anecdotal feedback regarding their posts. How have your personal experiences resonated with their ideas? What

can you add to their ideas, building upon the connections you have made to the material so far? Don’t forget, you can love or like their posts too.

When writing your post:

Do not create your post as a reply to a pinned post. Instead, use Yellowdig's Create option

to create a new post.

Label your post with the hashtag for the week (#Week 1) so others can sort posts by the week’s topic.

If you wish, include links to credible professional or scholarly articles, videos, images, or

other Web resources. These resources could be used to support your post or provide examples.

You may also choose to create a slideshow or use audio or video as your discussion post.

For help using Yellowdig, visit Yellowdig Technical Support or the Yellowdig Forums Campus support page.

 Synchronous Small-Group Meeting

This week you will meet in a small group including some of your peers from this course to discuss your Project Plan. Your instructor will lead the group and will give each participant

time to present their topic. Prepare for this meeting by being fluent with your project concept to date and by having drafted your ideas for the next sections. Remember that your

plan is iterative, and you may want to make some revisions based on your discussions with your peers during this group.

Read the Virtual Session Information for Learners [DOCX] so you are familiar with how synchronous meetings, one-on-one and small groups, will work in this course.

Please visit the Using Zoom page on Campus for more information.

 Prepare: Week 2 Assignment

To prepare for your first assignment next week, review the Project Plan [DOCX] template.

Important note: If your prior work was done in a different template or format, refer to the Virtual Residency Campus page for your PhD or Professional Doctorate program. You will

build parts of this plan for your assignments throughout this course. If you're required to take V8927 for your program or specialization, you will finish the plan then. It is important to

ensure that the plan's foundation is solid. Complete the following:

View the Project Plan Guides for your program on the Virtual Residency Campus page.

Alignment of Problem and Question

Aligning Your Problem and Question

The world is always open, waiting to be discovered.

–Dejan Stojanovic, Circling: 1978–1987

This week you will name, describe, and support the link between your topic and the field of

your program as well as your specialization. The most effective way to demonstrate your topic’s significance is to link it to the growing body of knowledge related to your topic.

TO DO LIST

Set-Up Yellowdig: Set up your Yellowdig account by accessing the "Set-up

Yellowdig account" button in Week 1. 

What You Need To Know: Review resources related to literature reviews.

TOPIC SELECTION AND PROBLEM

Overview

For this assignment, you will develop two specific areas using the Project Plan Template

[DOCX], which you will populate throughout this course:

Topic.

Problem.

The Project Plan helps you develop the details of your project. Your work will be viewed through multiple lenses, including those of instructors, peers, the existing literature, and other

sources. You should seek opportunities to improve and refine your work. As you deepen your understanding and add detail to your project, you should expect to make several revisions

during and after this course. Doctoral project planning is an iterative process, with each revision often inspiring further revisions until everything is aligned. These iterations are a

necessary and customary part of the doctoral journey.

Refer to the Virtual Residency Campus page for your PhD or Professional Doctorate

program's Project Plan Guide, and consider the following guidance as you develop these

SUBMIT YOUR ASSIGNMENT

areas of your Project Plan:

Discussion of the topic should begin with a topic sentence like this: "The topic for the proposed study is…" (The topic statement should not be the same as your question.) This

paragraph should include descriptive sentences that provide your reader with a clear overview of the topic supported with literature from evidence-based, peer-reviewed journal

articles. Example: The topic for the proposed study is resiliency among first-generation college students at four-year colleges. Describe resiliency, first-generation college students, and four-year colleges, supporting each description and citing that support.

Having clearly named, described, and supported each element of the topic, articulate the

link between your topic and the field of your program as well as your specialization. The most effective way to demonstrate your topic’s significance is to link it to the growing

body of peer-reviewed literature related to your topic. A dissertation or capstone is an independent, original piece of scholarship; you want to connect your proposed work

explicitly to the acceptable topics and methods for your program. Cited support is required.

The problem takes the form of a miniature literature review. Often this section is best

organized using subheadings for each concept, phenomenon, or variable you plan to study. This is a brief summary of important findings related to your study—it should be evident

that you are well-versed in the scholarship of literature on your proposed topic. The problem is also a good place to connect the target population in a deeper way to your

topic if you have not done so.

The reference section should be in perfect APA style. This section should include supporting references (articles cited in your Project Plan). Most projects will have 35 or

more references listed by the end of the course.

Instructions

Consult the Acceptable Topics and Methods and Project Plan Guide provided by your

program for specific expectations for the following sections. Be sure to update the reference list as you add resources to support your project development. Use the Project Plan Template

to structure your assignment as follows:

Topic

Describe the specific topic to be studied. Provide a brief synthesis of recent literature on

the topic and clearly identify the target population, variables, and/or concepts under study. Ensure that the topic is grounded in a problem and aligned with your program of study.

Example: The topic for the proposed study is the effect of transformational leadership on organizational citizenship behavior among employees in health care organizations. Describe transformational leadership, organizational citizenship behavior, and employees in health care organizations. Support and cite the support for each of these descriptions.

Describe the significance of this topic to your program or field (business, counseling,

education, technology, public service leadership, psychology, social work, and so on) and your specialization within your program if applicable.

Correctly form the topic.

Use appropriate language for key concepts/phenomena addressed by the topic.

Clearly specify relationships among the foundations (quantitative method).

Identify and define the specific concepts or foundations to be explored (qualitative method).

Name the target population.

Focus the concepts appropriately.

Use scholarly literature to explain what is known and unknown about this topic. Report the

actual study findings (not implications or recommendations) from recent (5–7 years from expected date of graduation), peer-reviewed articles, and seminal works to explain the

current status of the topic and to show the gap in understanding that you propose to fill.

Problem

Write a brief statement regarding the need for the study that fully describes the problem or need being addressed. The need for the study is often referred to as the project or research problem. Correctly state the problem:

Summarize existing literature and key findings.

Clearly formulate gaps in the existing literature or problems in practice.

Explicitly state, rather than imply, the project or research problem.

State the theoretical or conceptual framework with source.

In simplified terms, the project or research problem might take this form: “The scholarly

literature on _________ indicates that ________ is known and __________ is known, but what is not known is ______________." Write out the problem statement and theoretical

foundation. Quantitative problem statement example: "The proposed study will examine the

extent to which (independent variable) influences (dependent variable) among (population) (moderated/mediated by [variable]). X Theory (citation) will serve as the

theoretical framework of the proposed study."

Qualitative problem statement example: "The proposed study will seek to ________ (understand, describe, develop, discover) how [concepts/theory foundations] have

addressed the ________ (central phenomenon, experience/event, process) for _______ (the target population). The tenets of Y theory (citation) will serve as the conceptual

framework of the proposed study." Example: "This qualitative generic inquiry study will explore how Maslow's hierarchy

of needs' foundations of physiological and safety needs are associated with the perceptions of post-Covid 19 unemployed job seekers toward job hunting."

Additional Requirements

Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.

Be sure to use your Project Plan Template to structure your paper. Refer to the Virtual Residency Campus page for your PhD or Professional Doctorate program's Project Plan

Guide.

Resources: 15–25 scholarly references, including seminal works, listed in references section at the end of the paper.

The Capella library resource Researching Theory in the Capella Library may be a useful guide as you search for theory: https://capellauniversity.libguides.com/theory

APA guidelines: Double-spaced paragraph formatting in the body of the paper. When

appropriate, use APA-formatted headings. Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and format per Evidence and APA.

Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 points.

RESEARCH ETHICS: CITI CERTIFICATION

Overview

Capella University requires all doctoral learners and mentors to complete the CITI Basic

Course for Capella Learners available through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). The 10 modules comprising the course provide basic information on the ethical

principles and federal regulations that protect human participants in research. Completion of CITI training ensures that learners and mentors understand key concepts such as informed

consent and conflict of interest. The modules should be seen as an introduction to these concepts and do not describe Capella's IRB process. Learners should consult the Institutional

Review Board page for information relating to the IRB process at Capella and best practices for ethical research.

CITI modules may be reviewed and quizzes retaken as many times as needed to achieve a passing score. A minimum score of 85 percent correct overall is required for researchers to

obtain the certificate of completion for the CITI modules. Learner CITI certifications expire two years from the completion date. Learners are required to keep their CITI certification

current through the end of participant interaction, data collection, and de-identification of data (separation of data from identifiers) used for their dissertation or capstone project. You

can check the expiration date by logging in to your CITI account and selecting the completion record.

Instructions

To complete the CITI certification, go to the CITI website and use How to Register on CITI [PDF] to complete your registration. Complete all of required modules and associated quizzes,

which must be taken in the listed order. The basic course will require 2–4 hours to complete. You are encouraged to use multiple sessions and retake modules as needed.

Week 9

Sample Feasibility, Universe, and Frame

Are Your Plans Viable?

A successful journey may have you managing any number of details, from

learning the local language to ensuring you have the right credentials to

travel. Based upon the type of project you are proposing, your doctoral

journey will require you to look at your project's feasibility.

This week you'll begin formulating ideas about sampling and recruiting study participants

based upon the type of project you are proposing.

TO DO LIST

What You Need To Know: Explore resources on mixed methods for your project.

Discussion: Choose among three options as you discuss sample feasibility for

your project. 

 Discussion Overview

Discuss the characteristics of the population from which your sample will be drawn, share your feasibility concerns for your project, or share resources that were helpful in identifying and

clarifying the feasibility of your target population.

 What You Need to Know

Choose resources aligned with your topic and method used in your project. Remember to

search outside of the courseroom for the resources you need.

Mixed Methods

Devers, K. J., & Frankel, R. M. (2000). Study design in qualitative research--2: Sampling and

data collection strategies. Education for Health, 13(2), 263–271. Read the first five pages.

Marshall, M. N. (1996). Sampling for qualitative research. Family Practice, 13(6), 522–526.

Although this article focuses on qualitative methodology, its primary goal is to compare aspects of sampling in the two methodologies, which is our objective this week.

Onwuegbuzie, A. J., & Collins, K. M. T. (2007). A typology of mixed methods sampling

designs in social science research [PDF]. The Qualitative Report, 12(2), 281–316. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/tqr/vol12/iss2/9/

Specifically, read the sections "Sampling Schemes," pages 283–287, and "Sample Size," pages 287–289. You are welcome to read the rest of the article—and you should save it

for your methodology reference list—but it is very technical and, unless you are well- versed in sampling theory, it can be quite confusing. Another reason to read only the two

assigned sections is that the rest of the article discusses mixed methodologies design, which is far more complex than single methodology research designs and are subject to

additional conditions and permissions at Capella. However, the two assigned sections are clear and applicable to the topic this week, and you should be able to use them

productively.

study, based upon the type of research you are proposing. Let's discuss the feasibility of your project population and how you will recruit them for your proposed study. For this week's

discussion, choose one of the following for your post:

Discuss the characteristics of the larger population from which your sample will be drawn.

Share your sampling strategy (probability or non-probability) and the specific method (random, purposive, convenience, and so on). What is your greatest concern about finding

the right people (or data) for your study?

Share your feasibility concerns for your project. How will you address these issues to ensure a successful project?

As we wrap up this week, share resources you felt were most helpful in identifying and

clarifying the feasibility of your target population.
