Competency 2: Connect to the Internet to gather information and evaluate the validity and reliability of sources

Study Guide

For each sub-competency, I have listed some Internet websites and videos for you to study to become proficient in the subject matter. Then I have listed some key concepts that you should know about each one. Based on your performance in the Competency 2 self-assessment, you can follow-up by studying the specific topics that you are not already familiar with. Once you are comfortable with the material, then  you can proceed on to the Competency 2 Required Assessment. You can retake the self-assessment to see if you think you are ready to proceed.

Once you have completed the required assessment, you have to option of doing the advanced assessment. It is optional, but if you want to earn an A in the course, you will need to do at least 2 of the advanced competency assessments.

3. To connect to the Internet, you need a network connection and an Internet Service Provider (ISP)

. Key Concepts:

3. Intellectual property is a term referring to creations of the intellect for which a monopoly is assigned to designated owners by law.

Some common types of intellectual property rights are copyright, patents, and industrial design rights; and the rights that protect trademarks, trade dress, and in some jurisdictions trade secrets: all these cover music, literature, and other artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols, and designs.

3. A copyright is a legal right created by the law of a country that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights for its use and distribution.

7. Limit of 10% or 3 min of motion media, which ever is less

7. Limit of 10% or 1000 words text, which ever is less

7. Use no more than 3 poems by 1 poet or 5 poets from 1 anthology, up to 250 words from a poem

7. Limit of 10% or 30 sec music from single musical work, can not substantially change music

7. Whole image but no more than 5 by 1 artist or photographer

7. Limit of 10% or 15 images single published work, which ever is less

7. Limit of 10% or 2500 fields or cells from a database or data table, which ever is less
