Week 6 Reflective Journal
Critical thinking connects this week in both assignments in that both required thinking outside of the status quo in reference to business thinking and providing well-constructed feedback to our peers. I found the required reading “Failure with the Best Intentions” most interesting to read. The article touched on several ways to manage conflict but also realizing failure is a part of life when dealing with goals we set for ourselves.
One aspect I need to improve on is “Listening to other’s views.” Although this is very important in the role I am in; I tend to block out information that makes “no sense” to me. For instance, If I experienced a situation and another person is explaining the same or similar situation, and their resolution does not align with my recommendation I shut them out. I think why are they taking this course of action when the easiest way to mitigate the problem is the solution I had because it worked. What I need to keep in mind is, everyone has a different way of doing things, and my way may not be the best option.
As I have said in a few of my previous reflection, after I retire from the Army, my new role will be an Equal Opportunity advisor. I have to have several solutions to help solve issues that are brought to me by a disgruntled employee. Being able to resolve the situation in the best interest of both parties will be my priority, and being able to think critically will aid in my responses.
Critical Thinking is, having the ability to see a problem and solve it deeper than the surface. It allows you to know the root of the problem, and prevent it from happening again.
An assignment that comes to mind is, in my US Government class we had to state an executive order we would sign on day one. Initially, the assignment seemed easy; I said I wanted to give Felons the right to vote in all states with some previsions of course. Although the professor did not disagree with me, he challenged my order and forced me to think beyond the “it’s not fair mentality.” He posed several questions that made me rethink my order.
