Global Studies

Why is it important?

1

I. Introduction: Learning Outcomes

In this first week we will be exploring three terms that are key to this course, but also essential for developing skills necessary to successfully navigate through the complexities of our increasingly interdependent world.  These terms are global studies, globalization and global citizenship.   Chapter one of An Introduction to Global Studies offers an in depth exploration of these terms.  It begins with an examination of the field of global studies as it is conceptualized and practiced around the globe.  Then, the chapter presents a working definition of globalization, describing some of its most prominent characteristics. It then looks at economic, political, and cultural globalization processes separately and in greater depth. The chapter ends with a discussion of global citizenship, comparing it with traditional definitions of citizenship and considering how it might function as a useful category in today’s globalizing world.

Having read the chapter with care, you should be able to offer

insights into the following questions:

How is global studies similar to or different from other fields such as international studies and international relations?

What are some of the various definitions of globalization, and what are the arguments in support and in opposition to globalization?

On balance is globalization a “positive” or “negative” phenomenon?

Is globalization a new phenomenon or is it an extension and acceleration of processes that have been going on throughout human history?

How does the concept of global citizenship differ from traditional definitions of citizenship?

II. What is “Global Studies” About?

What do we mean by “global studies” and why is it important as an academic field?  The text highlights a number of areas common to the field (see p. 2-3).  Here is a summary:

1.      Global studies emerged in the context of globalization, a key term that is discussed in chapter 1 also.

2.      Global studies emerged from a realization that globalization is too complex and multifaceted to be studies from the narrow confines of any particular discipline, for example economics, political science, sociology or history.  To be understood in all of its complexity a multidisciplinary perspective is essential.

3.      A global study recognizes the connection between broad global patterns and the individual.  Reflect on the adage “think globally, act locally”.  As individuals we impact the world around us, and the world around us impacts us.

4.      Global studies is not just about understanding the world.  It is also about changing the world in a positive fashion.

Do all academic institutions and organizations define global studies in precisely the same manner?  The following links should take you to institutions close to our neighborhood.  Do a bit of exploring of your own:

Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington Seattle.

Global Studies Program, University of Washington Bothell.

Global Studies Degree, Cascadia Community College .
