Beam and Frame Deflection
Part 1: for the frame below, assume B and C are hinge supported, and A is roller supported. Assume P=12 kips, a=3 ft, Ic=60000 in4 for the columns, Ib= 20000 in4 for the beams, E=30,000 ksi for both beams and columns.
Part 1.a: Use the virtual work method to calculate the vertical displacements of node E and G. (20%) Part 1.b: Use the virtual work method to calculate the horizontal displacements of node H and A (20%) Part 1.c: Use SAP2000 to solve the deformation of the frame and plot the deflected shape of the frame. Compare the displacements from SAP2000 with those in part 1.a and 1.b. If different, explain why? (15%) Part 1.d: change the properties to Ic=40000 in4 for the columns, Ib= 30000 in4 for the beams. Re-run the SAP2000 analysis; compare results with those from part 1.c and comment on possible difference. (10%) Part 2: for the beam below, assume A is a pin and C is a roller. The beam is W21x50 and the Young’s modulus is E=30,000 ksi.
Part 2.a: Use the virtual work method to calculate vertical displacements of node B. (10%) Part 2.b: Use the virtual work method to calculate the rotation of node D. (10%) Part 2.c: Use the SAP2000 to solve the deformation of the beam and plot the deflected shape of the beam; (20%) Part 2.d: Compare results in part 2.c with those from part 2.a and 2.b, comment on possible difference (5%)

Project Report Requirements: 1) Print your results clearly! Electronic copy of your report should be submitted through iLearn before 5pm of due date. 2) Project report must have the signatures of all group members! Otherwise, it will be declined. 3) The comparison should be presented in a tabulated way. 4) Prints from SAP2000 should be clear and clean.
