ENGR 323 Spring 2021 Group Project 1 (Due on Feb 23 2021)
Statically Determinate Truss and Frame Part 1: Consider the truss shown below. Assume all members are pin connected.
Part 1.a: Use the method of join to determine the force in each member. State
compression or tension for each member. (15%) Part 1.b: Use SAP 2000 to solve the force in each member. (15%) Part 1.c: Change the truss member section to W8x40, and use SAP 2000 to re-solve the
forces in truss members. (10%) Part 1.c: Tabulate the member forces from parts (a), (b), and (c), and Comment on the possible difference. (5%)
Part 2: For the frame shown below, P=8 kN and a=2.0m. Assume all members are W18x50.
Part 2.a: By hand calculation, solve the reaction forces, and develop the shear force and moment diagram for the frame. (20%) Part 2.b: Solve parts a using SAP 2000 for the reaction forces, and the shear force and moment diagram. (15%) Part 2.c: Change the frame member section to W18x40, and use SAP 2000 to re-solve the reaction forces, and the shear force and moment diagram. (10%) Part 2.d: Compare results from 2.a, 2.b and 2.c, and comment on possible difference. (10%)
