Determinants of a global health challenge, impact of globalisation and recommended strategies: Group presentation
The assignment task
The group will identify the social, economic and environmental determinants of a pre-selected global health challenge, explain how globalisation impacts on the problem, and recommend strategies which could be used to tackle it. It also provides an opportunity to establish relationships with peers and collaborate in small groups to discover knowledge. Your group will prepare, organize, and deliver an engaging oral presentation at the same time as developing communication skills at responding effectively to audience questions. In doing this you will practice applying appropriate oral communication skills to effectively engage with peers and staff. Learning outcomes assessed by this assessment task:
1. Describe measures of the global burden of disease and global health disparities 2. Describe and characterise a range of transnational and global public health challenges 3. Describe the role of international agencies and how these articulate with national agencies
to address global health challenges through coordinated global health action 4. Explain how social, economic and environmental determinants of health impact on global
health challenges 5. Explain the impact of globalisation on global burden of disease and injury 6. Identify and critically evaluate the health system and health policy levers that can be used
to improve health outcomes in developing (low and middle income) countries 7. Demonstrate an awareness of intercultural and ethical issues in responding to global
health challenges
The following components should be included in the presentation
Identify the social, economic and environmental determinants of a selected global health challenge;
Recognize the impact of globalisation on the health challenge, focusing on populations within a local or global context;
Recommend strategies/control measures (based on evidence) for improvement of the global public health challenge;
Determinants of a global health challenge: Group presentation
Due date: In class group presentation, Monday 9 July 2018
Time limit: 15 minutes presentation
5 minutes questions and answers
Weighting: Mark out 100, weighted to 20% of grade
Your presentation should include:
a) Introduction
What is the focus of your presentation o which global heath challenge has your group selected?
What is the context for this global health challenge o is your focus on Australia, specific countries within an international context or
global spread?
b) Epidemiology/characteristics of the challenge (this should be very brief)
Why is the global public health challenge of concern
What is the health impact/s – morbidity and mortality (disability/illness and disease)
Who is at risk from this health issue e.g. affected population/s
Size of the health issue e.g. geographical spread, number of people affected
c) Social, economic and environmental determinants
Drawing on your understanding of the social, economic and environmental determinants of health, explain the causes of this global health challenge
How do the determinants impact on this global health challenge
d) Impact of globalisation on the global public health challenge
Describe the impact that globalisation has had on your health challenge (describe at least 2 factors)
Depending on your global health challenge this may include: o increased frequency of human interaction (leading to spread of infectious
diseases) o globalisation of western culture (leading to obesity)
e) Strategies to control/tackle the global public health challenge
You should select at least two (2) different strategies supported by evidence using literature e.g. policy, laws that regulate and protect, quarantine etc.
How can the recommended strategies reduce the impact of the global public health challenge
o why does it work, how do we know it works - what does the literature describe OR
You may decide that not enough is currently being done, or was done, to control the global health challenge, and therefore suggest a control measure/strategy that you think should be implemented to improve and protect the population/s affected and describe the reasons why; this also needs to be supported with evidence.
Instructions
Time limit
The presentation must not exceed 15 minutes. Your group will be given 5 minutes following the
presentation to respond to questions from the audience.
