Working Title

Are racial/ethnic minorities less likely to be compliant with Type II Diabetes treatment compared to non-minority groups?

Introduction/Background

The introductory slides will be slides 2-3 discussing the current epidemiology of Type II Diabetes with national statistics provided by the CDC and the Mayo Clinic. This information will include age, gender, racial/ethnic disparities, and potential complications and co-morbidities associated with worsening disease outcomes as outlined by Peek et. al. (2007). The purpose of this information is to show the financial implications by days of productivity loss, cost of medical and health expenditures and the need to better understand risk factors and associations with poor outcomes.

Theories/conceptual framework

In this segment we will devote 2-3 slides on the theoretical approaches and conceptual framework discussion theory of health behavior and how an individual’s intention may engage specific health behaviors, which could be linked to medication compliance (LaMorte, 2019). Further association between this theory and health outcomes will be described graphically. Other key models that will briefly be discussed are the information-motivation behavioral model as discussed in Nelson et. al. (2018), and the health belief model used in Shabibi et. al. (2017).

Methods

Through utilizing Walden University Library, PubMed, Google Scholar, articles pertaining to this public health topic were found. Key search words included: Type II Diabetes, diabetes, medication compliance, health outcomes, racial disparities. Articles were limited to most recent publications within the past 5 years from peer reviewed journals. This will be limited to one slide in the power point presentation.

The following slides will be concentrated in describing the patient populations studied in key articles pertaining to the health topic. Discussion of outcomes, statistical analysis and strength of statistical testing will be displayed. Key inferences and outcomes on disease measures whether it was Hemoglobin A1C levels, blood plasma glucose levels, and the relationship of medication compliance, and sociodemographic findings such as race and minority status will be synthesized in 10 slides. The types of studies and purpose or strength used to evaluate outcomes would be briefly discussed. This would include whether retrospective cohort studies such as pertaining to Goonsesekera et. al. (2015), Patel et. al. (2016), and Blumberg et al (2014), or cross-sectional studies as in Nelson et. al. (2018). The key findings of the systematic literature review performed by Mayberry et. al. (2016), Agarwal et. al. (2018), and Adams et. al. (2015) will provide a fundamental background for the presentation. Understanding if there are differences pertaining to types of treatment strategies will reflect the work in Siu et al. (2015).

Strengths and Limitations

This will consist of 3-4 slides regarding the areas in the research presented that were strong, discussing importance of minimizing bias, confounding variables, and appropriate statistical analysis performed. The discussion of limitations of the studies will also be revealed in 2 slides where there may have been bias within the studies, inappropriate sampling, or other limitations from literature search review methods as well.

Recommendations for Future Research

This section will highlight and overall take home of importance of health outcomes, understanding further the relationship of medication compliance and chronic illnesses. The need to better educate patients, areas to better understand social, racial or economic barriers such as health insurance and medication compliance. This will be performed in 2 slides.
