Group 5: Assimilation Policy

Guiding Questions:

· What was the policy of assimilation?

· What were specific strategies/instructional methods boarding schools employed to assimilate Native Americans?

· What was the impact of assimilation on Native American Nations?

· What do Native American schools look like today? What challenges do they face?

Each group member should do the following:

1. Summarize the PBS Documentary. Watch, listen, and read along. Take notes on key individuals, ideas, and events. Be sure to include the perspective and point-of-view of the individuals (or groups). Do not make your summary more than one page.

Collaborate to put together the best group summary.

2. Find 2 video clips and audio clips that are 1-2 minutes long that would enhance your summary. Describe each clip in one or two sentences.

3. Create a presentation with no more than 6-7 slides. Focus on the additional sources that go beyond the main audio story. Use visuals or a minimal amount of text on your slides. Prepare notes to talk about your slides and display your knowledge.

4. What are the 3 – 5 big “take-aways” from this presentation? What do you want your classmates to know?
