Dear loyal customers of Sephora,
In a makeup tutorial that was posted on October 31st, the beauty influencer Jaclyn Hill dressed as something that was culturally offensive to many of our beloved customers. In the video Jaclyn was seen wearing a traditional Native American Headdress while using our products to paint stripes and on her face as part of her Halloween costume. Throughout the video she made comments about the Native American culture that were offensive and continued to make remarks about how, “people are so sensitive nowadays”. We understand that many people are upset about this incident and we want to assure our customers that we do not stand with her or this type of behavior.
Sephora apologizes for the actions of this individual and the fact that Sephora and our products were involved. We are deeply sorry for the people who have been hurt by the video that was posted by Jaclyn Hill. Sephora does not condone or support the use of race or culture as a costume nor the stereotypes the costumes perpetuate. Again, we are sorry for the damage this incident has caused and apologize to the people who have been hurt by it.
After this incident Jaclyn Hill, a face of Sephora was negatively trending on all of our social media platforms, we asked her to take down the video and took it off of all of our media because here at Sephora, we do not support or condone any cultural appropriation.
As a result of her actions, we have decided to remove Ms. Hill from our PR list. In addition, we will be removing all posters, banners, and images endorsing Ms. Hill from our stores and website. In conclusion, Sephora has chosen to no longer be affiliated with Jaclyn. In an effort to raise awareness to this unfortunate event we are also going to make videos addressing why cultural Halloween costumes are not appropriate.
