The healthcare world has evolved over the years but nursing basic care and needs have remained unchanged. Nursing still to this day remains as a nurturing and comforting role aside from all the other skills we are taught to perform. There are 2 ways that we can apply the early conceptualization about nursing theory to advanced practice nursing which are from Weidenbach and Henderson theorists. Weidenbach’snursing theory spoke about “the motivating factors that influence the nurse not only in doing what she does, but also in doing it the way she does it” (Smith, M., & Parker, M. 2015, p.57). I believe that this can be applied in the advanced practice nursing in every way possible. In order to pursue a career in nursing and to continue to study it further as we all do today, we should have a purpose and a reason why we are taking our time and dedicating it to this profession. Not only do we need to like this profession, but we also need to have clear understanding of why we are in it. As an advanced practical nurse, we need to assess our patients in order to decide a plan for their recovery. However, our attitude towards the patient and their situation plays a huge role in how we manage their care. We are not only assessing our patients and initiating a plan, but we are also going to encounter ourselves with obstacles and certain situations where we must remain professional. For example, in a situation where the patient is being difficult or their family due to miscommunications or any other reason, as professionals we are committed to remain in a positive attitude by reminding ourselves why we are doing it and how we will accomplish that goal no matter how tough the situation we encounter may be.

Also, Henderson’s conceptualization of care can be applied to advance practice nursing by continuing to care for our patients and helping them achieve their basic needs through their recovery. The way we can do this as an advanced practice nurse is by decreasing anxiety levels in our patients. For example, in today’s practice I have witnessed many patients who experience anxiety due to them not being clear on what is happening while they are at the hospital, or also because they did not understand what a doctor or another professional explained to them. However, as an advanced practice nurse we can apply one of Henderson’s 14 components “communicate with others in expressing emotions, needs, fears, or opinions” (Smith, M., & Parker, M. 2015, p. 58) when we speak to our patients. Instead of explaining a procedure or anything we are trying to communicate to our patients and not verifying if they understood or how they feel, we should take the time to make sure our patients are understanding what we are saying in order for them to be aware of what is happening with their case every time, therefore decreasing their anxiety levels.

One MSN Essential that most relates to this topic would be essential II Organizational and Systems Leadership. According to Henderson “the nurse is, and should be legally, an independent practitioner and able to make independent judgments...” (p.62). Even though Henderson is referring to nurses in this statement it still applies to the advanced practice nurse since it supports the idea of us being leaders of our patients care. Once we have a master’s in nursing, we are expected to think in a leadership role to initiate and make our plan of every patient we work with to practice.
