Graphic Organizers

Graphic Organizers

The purpose of graphic organizers is to help students spatially represent the overall structure of information being read or learned. It is especially good with students who learn best from graphics rather than a linear textual format. Diagrams become ways of relating ideas and learning vocabulary.

Preparation

Select words or major concepts from reading or the unit. Concentrate on those that you wish students to know at the end of the unit and leave out extra material.

Preparation

Arrange words into diagram that helps students see relationships between terms and concepts

Preparation

Add key words and ideas previously learned or to the major concepts.

Preparation

Present the graphic organizer to the class in its entirety and discuss it or present the format with key concepts missing and see if students can fill them in. Pose questions to check student understanding of the relationships diagrammed.

When introducing graphic organizers be sure to:

Model – Give an example using familiar terms and concepts

Model – how to construct a graphic organizer

Discuss - when and how to use them

Practice – by having students construct a graphic organizer and explain why they chose that particular construction.
