Grammar 4 - Summative Writing Task - Due by 9 am Friday, October 20 via Canvas
Write a short essay that demonstrates your ability to construct complex sentences with two subordinate clause types: noun clauses and adjective clauses.
The essay should be approximately 200-300 words. It should be structured with at least two paragraphs. The writing must be your own. If outside sources are used, be sure paraphrase and cite your sources. Use correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Follow standard formatting conventions.
In the essay, include the following targeted grammar points:
A. Use four of the following types of noun clauses correctly:
1. With common mental activity verbs (e.g., agree, believe)
2. With adjectives that show emotion (e.g., afraid, surprised)
3. To embed yes/no questions in statements or questions using if/whether.
4. To embed wh-questions in statements or questions using wh-words.
5. To report speech or paraphrase written texts
B. Use four adjective clauses to define, describe, or further explain some of the nouns in your essay.
1. Include at least one essential (restrictive) adjective clause
2. Include at least one non-essential (non-restrictive) adjective clause
3. Use at least 4 different relative pronouns:
·
· that
· which
· who
· whom
· whose
· where
· when
In the essay, highlight the target clauses. Use yellow for noun clauses and light blue for the adjective clauses. (If you use another coding system, that is fine, but be sure to include a key that explains which label is used for which clause type.)
Choose from one of the following topics:
A. Further explore one of the ideas presented in the textbook readings (e.g., Freecycle, eBay, Dr. Spock, Sesame Street, etc.) Summarize or paraphrase part of the article and respond to it. You can incorporate new ideas using basic web research or personal interviews.
B. Write about an aspect of parenting or child/adolescent development. Use web articles or videos as sources. You can respond to the ideas in the source based on your own experience and/or cultural understanding.
C. Write about another web platform with which you are familiar or would like to learn more about (e.g,
facebook, craigslist, Canvas, Google, etc.) Describe how it works and in what ways people use it. Include your experience with it and/or feelings/ opinions about it.
Amazon is a website that sells nearly everything[footnoteRef:1]. It lists more than 1 million products on the site. People who like to shop[footnoteRef:2] use Amazon frequently. On the site, which is easy to navigate[footnoteRef:3], you can shop by category or search for a specific item. The items that are listed on Amazon[footnoteRef:4] can come from different sellers. Sometimes a product includes free shipping. Sometimes the seller who has the lowest price[footnoteRef:5] charges more for shipping, so it’s important to compare prices carefully. Most items on Amazon are new, but some things, such as books, are also sold used. Amazon also has some unique products. It sells the Kindle, which is an e-reader[footnoteRef:6], and e-books. It also sells products called Echo and Alexa, which are hands-free, cloud-based, web-enabled devices for the home[footnoteRef:7]. They also sell the Fire Tablet, which is quite affordable[footnoteRef:8]. I am an occasional Amazon user. I don’t shop much, but when I do, I often check to see if I can buy the product on Amazon[footnoteRef:9]. I think that the products on Amazon are often a fair price[footnoteRef:10]. Sometimes shipping can be too expensive, though. While I do feel that shopping online is very convenient[footnoteRef:11], I am not a technophile. When I first heard about Alexa, I couldn’t understand why someone would need something like that[footnoteRef:12]. I still don’t totally understand what it is used for[footnoteRef:13], other than entertainment. I am surprised that so many people own it[footnoteRef:14]. A news story I heard the other day[footnoteRef:15] said that these kinds of devices were gaining in popularity[footnoteRef:16].
