Literature Review

I. Referencing, Citation, Plagiarism (proper documentation of sources using ASA style)

You have 3 sources at the end of your reference list that somehow did not get alphabetized with the rest. And a couple spots where you use (pg.) instead of the (Smith 2016:xx) format. But your formatting itself is actually quite strong. Most students are using APA or some other style and not being consistent, but your reference list at the end of the paper is really in good format, except for the 3 that need to be reordered in the list.

The main major issue is plagiarism/misrepresentation. There should be 100% matchup between sources listed at end of paper and sources cited in the paper. Yet a majority of the sources listed at the end of the paper are not cited during the paper. You only cited 5 of the sources you listed (Ghosal & Knight; Kessler-Harris; Mize; Pfeffer; and Vaughn). If you are not going to cite them in your paper, remove them from your list. If you are going to incorporate them better, I have provided some suggestions in item IV below of how to do it.

Also, you have a sentence “According to Hessler’s research from Dayton and Levenstein’s usage” but neither of these sources include a date and are not listed in your references. Again, make sure anything cited in the paper is listed at the end, and anything listed at the end is cited in the paper.

II. Organization (intro & conclusion; not laundry list summaries; easy to follow, clear direction of where you are going; appropriate subheads)

Good organization! Just need to fill in some more details under each section as noted above and below. That should get your length back up once you remove the last few pages here. This should not have included methodology section yet… that I will review with your next assignment.

III. Research Questions (derive your own research questions from your lit review, make it clear how your project will enhance/add to/clarify/differ from prior work)

One thing you should be able to improve once you use more of the articles (as noted below) is getting more clear about what exactly all these studies did, and what it is about your project that is going to do what they haven’t done. For example, you have a Mize article about sexual orientation in the labor market. What did they find exactly in that article? How many people were studied and when? Since you say you are interested in also speaking with hiring officials, will you be asking them some of the same things that Mize did? Did Mize do a quantitative study and you are doing a qualitative study? How will you be filling in the gaps that weren’t done there, with your own study? You should ask yourself these same questions about the relationship between your study and the prior research for each article you summarize and use in your paper. It is not clear right now those relationships.

IV. Quantity/Quality of Sources (follows assignment guidelines for appropriate sources)

Miller, Diane H. 1998. “Freedom to Differ: The Shaping of the Gay and Lesbian Struggle for Civil Rights.” NYU Press. Is this a book or an article? Articles go in quotation marks while book titles should be italicized (or underlined). I’m guessing it’s a book because of the NYU Press. Please see correct ASA format for books, it should say New York: NYU Press.

Also, need more info in order to evaluate source: Vaughn, Shemya 2016. “Transgender Youth: Perceptions, Media Influences and Social Challenges.” Nova.

Main issue is you have only used 5 of these sources so far. The quality of the sources listed is very good, you just haven’t read or used them to the fullest. Use the article mapping template sheet in Module 3, and get way more details about each article’s when/where/who they studied and when. I should find this out about every single one of these articles while I’m reading the Lit Review. Instead you have just “cherry picked” a few quotes as of now.

V. “The Basics” (spelling, grammar, word choice, appropriate language)
