Statistical Analysis Group Project

The emphasis in this course is on practical application of statistical knowledge in preparation for real world experiences. One of the best ways to learn and gain confidence in the use of introductory statistics is to apply the techniques to a real question, muster and organizing data to answer the question. For this project, you will work will a group of your peers to: formulate a research question and a hypothesis; organize data; identify characteristics of the data; suggest possible relationships within the data; and present preliminary findings about the validity of your hypothesis.

Grading Rubric/ Format for Statistical Analysis Project

I. Individual Effort – 15 points

The points for this element will come directly from peer evaluations of your participation in the statistical analysis project. Specifically, your group members will be asked to evaluate the following:

(1) Group member participation – 3 points

(2) Ability to carefully listen to other’s ideas – 2 points

(3) Giving feedback – 2 points

(4) Cooperation and respect for group members – 2 points

(5) Completing tasks on time (Time management) – 3 points

(6) Attendance at group meetings – 3 points

II. Project Report (Group Points) – 60 points

There are seven graded elements of your research report, as follows:

(1) Research Question – 5 points

Explain why the research question is important?

(2) Data Description – 30 points

Describe source of data (if you collected data, indicate sampling methods and instrument), include descriptive statistics for data (mean, median, standard deviation, minimum and maximum). Construct tables and graphs.

(3) Formulating Research Hypothesis – 3 points

Describe your hypothesis in words and state the hypotheses

(Bluman Chapters 8-9).

(4) Selecting Appropriate Statistical Test – 2 points

State what kind of test you are using. Are you using a t test or z test? Why?

(5) Conducting the Test – 10 points

Work through steps 2 & 3 of hypothesis testing and Show Your Work. Design a figure showing the critical region. Compute test value and show its location in the figure, and include formula used.

(6) Reporting the Results – 5 points

Make a decision on the null hypothesis. Summarize the results in relation to the claim you were testing.

III. Correlation Analysis (Group Points) – 25 points

(1) Draw and label scatter plot – 5 points

(2) Compute correlation coefficient and show the formula – 5 points

(3) Test the significance of the correlation coefficient – 10 points

(4) Grammar and Organization – 5 points

IV. Overall conclusions and recommendation (Group Points) – 5 points

V. Presentation (Group Points) – 15 points

Peers will evaluate your presentation, as well as the instructor. An average of the two scores will comprise this portion of your grade.

(1) Professionalism – 5 points

(2) Clarity of Presentation – 5 points

(3) Visual Aids – 5 points
