Individual Research Proposal Outline

CCMH/525

Dr. Debra Napier

Statement of purpose: The purpose of this research proposal is to provide accurate study documentation of the effects of being homeless and residing inside of a homeless shelter. This proposal also intends to investigate and explain the reasons why people end up in homeless shelters. Comment by Debra Napier: Brandi, worthy research regarding homelessness. You may want to narrow the focus of your study to either the experiences of homeless people in homeless shelters and the effects in terms of a specific outcome; or investigating contributions that contribute to homeless in an effort to develop some type of prevent program.

Rationale: This proposal will include reasons why people become homeless, why people decide to live in shelters, why some people are turned away from shelters and the effects from being turned away from them. There have been people with mental illnesses who have been turned away, there is overcrowding in many shelters which makes it difficult for some shelters to provide a place to sleep. My rationale for this study is to analyze the reasons why homeless shelters are just not enough and to formulate a possible solution for this crisis. Comment by Debra Napier: so now you are looking to examine the effects of mental health of homeless people seeking shelters?

Hypothesis: Homelessness exists because of the lack of affordable housing and

many people are homeless because of substance abuse and mental illness.

Homeless shelters aren’t efficient enough to handle different types of people.

There should be doctors and nurses in every shelter so that each person can be evaluated and properly taken care of medically. Comment by Debra Napier: hypothesis are predictions that research is designed to prove (and may disprove). What specifically are you looking to investigate. Perhaps the outcome of your study might suggest the need for doctors and nurses to provide medical evaluation - but that would not be part of your hypothesis - unless your hypothesis is that doctors' and nurses' care can improve outcomes for homeless persons.

Method: I plan to use indirect estimation in my research because it will be easier to count the homeless although counting them will be difficult because there isn’t a clear and concise definition of homelessness and I am also going to use data collection in order to find out how many homeless people live in shelters. Lastly, I am going to interview homeless people who live in shelters because this will be a way to hear the story from the person who is having to endure living in a homeless shelter. Comment by Debra Napier: is not Comment by Debra Napier: you can define homeless for purposes of your study. for your study homeless would have to include those persons residing in homeless shelters. Comment by Debra Napier: Just a note of caustion that finding the number of people living in shelters would be difficult due to the transient nature of homelessness. Perhaps you would look to shelters for the numbers of attendees in a given period of time. Comment by Debra Napier: part of your study will be case studies?

Statistical Analysis: For a subject that involves people and a situation such as living in a homeless shelter, critical analysis would be the appropriate test for data analysis. This test is necessary in order to determine the validity of my hypothesis and to make an effective argument on the points listed in the hypothesis. I am also partial to the confounding variable, so I will be using both of these analysis in my research. Comment by Debra Napier: as opposed to stating your partial, perhaps the numerous aspects of homelessness is the cause of using a confounding variable as part of your analysis.
