Point Value

a. OVERVIEW of the theory

*Includes a slide that summarizes the theory in your own words (paraphrase; avoid direct quotes)

*Highlights what the theory predicts or explains

*Information is correct AND reflects what we learned in class (i.e., from the e-book, slides, and supplemental materials).

*You may only use information from the book and lecture slides. Information from websites such as Wikipedia, communication theory websites (general Google info.), etc. will not be accepted. Failure to adhere to this standard will result in an automatic 10-point deduction from the overall grade on the assignment. (I took the 10-point deduction from this part of the assignment grade)

The theory is not “accomplished” by self-disclosure. Relationship development happens with self-disclosure. Also, what IS self-disclosure? Your overview included terminology from the theory, but it was not clear that you understood what it all meant based on your description. You also used parts of the theory that we did not cover in class.

b. OVERVIEW of chosen media and 4-5 concepts from the theory

*Bullet points and audio recording briefly list the concepts (not defined or explained just yet) and identify media chosen to illustrate those concepts.

*Citation for media is included at the bottom of the slide (including title, author, season number, episode number, time frame, etc.).

*Reminder: Examples must be from the same media (e.g., same TV show, same article, etc.).

*If examples for different concepts from the theory are from different episodes of the same show, citation information for each episode should appear with the concept it is used to illustrate (i.e., on slides 4-7 or 4-8), so that I can easily locate and review it.

I was very disappointed to find that the information you used in this presentation was from an online website (e.g., “they are most commonly known by their labels in the school: the criminal, the princess, the athlete, the brain, and the basket case”).

c./ d. DETAILED explanation of chosen media and 4-5 concepts from the theory

*Each concept from the theory is defined and explained in your own words

*Provide very clear, specific and detailed examples from the media you chose that illustrate each concept from the theory.

*Information related to the theory should ONLY come from the e-book and course slides. Information from websites such as Wikipedia will not be accepted.

*Points will be deducted as applicable for incorrectly defining or using course terminology

You used aspects of the theory that we did not cover in class, which tells me that you did not even bother to review the chapter on the theory you chose. This was very disappointing. I gave you credit for mentioning breadth and depth, although they were only mentioned very briefly and were not at the center of your analysis.

e. Conclusion

*Last slide briefly explains what you learned from the assignment

Your description of what you learned centered on lessons from the movie, rather than focusing on SPT. There was a brief mention of SPT toward the end.

___5__/ 10

f. Terminology integration

*Terminology is utilized in a way that lets me know you understand the theory and concepts associated with it

*Concepts should not just be “dropped in” or quickly read during the audio recording. Instead, concepts should be thoughtfully and correctly utilized throughout the presentation

**Point deductions are possible for inaccurate use of terminology. Be sure you correctly understand the theory and concepts before you begin your presentation!

POWER POINT SLIDES

*Professional, appropriate for college-level work in an upper-division course

*Pictures, quotes, examples, etc. are clearly linked to the theory and the 4-5 course concepts you chose.

**Slides are clear and organized; spelling and grammar issues are very minimal

***Includes all required slides:

SLIDE 1: Cover

SLIDE 2: Overview of the theory

SLIDE 3: Identify media and list 4-5 concepts from the theory

SLIDES 4-7 (or 4-8): Explain and illustrate each concept one-by-one

*Each slide (4 – 7/8) has one concept from the theory and one example from the media you chose to illustrate it

SLIDE 8 (or 9): Conclusion

Your font was different sizes, even within the same slide. There were also no pictures and too much writing on each slide.

___7__/ 10

AUDIO presentation

*Presentation is clear, concise, and to the point.

*Voice is strong and clear with no (or minimal) background noise

*It is obvious the presentation was prepared & rehearsed (no rambling, ums, likes, etc.), as if it was being given in a face-to-face class.

*If a GROUP is working on the project, ALL MEMBERS MUST record part of the presentation (different members can record on different slides, at different times, if group members cannot record at the same time. If any member records their part late, the full assignment will be considered late). If all members are not on the recording, there will be an automatic 10-point deduction.

**Remember your basic presentation skills from public speaking!!! They count!

More practice was needed to make the presentation sound more professional.

___8__/ 20

POSSIBLE DEDUCTIONS:

Late penalty (per the syllabus): Beginning the minute the submission box closes (- 10% per day)

*Using information for the “theory overview” that was not covered as part of the class (-10)

*For a group project, not all members are on the presentation/recording (-10)

*Other deductions at the discretion of the instructor

TOTAL: Sugi –Together, this evidence suggests that you used an essay or project posted online to explain how “The Breakfast Club” demonstrates SPT. This could be considered academic dishonesty.
