School Climate

Children actively construct knowledge based on their experiences, relationships, and social contexts. Therefore, it is important that schools provide a positive learning environment (i.e. school climate) that provides support for learning social and emotional skills as well as academic content.

Culture

Culture plays a crucial role in a child’s overall development. It is the primary shaper of their personality, behavior, and identity. A child’s culture will ultimately determine elements such as what language they will speak, what foods they will eat, and even how they perceive the world that surrounds them.

Peer Relationships

The relationships that a child builds with his or her peers in the early stages of life can leave a lasting impression in the process of their development. Both positive and negative relationships help children to learn a range of critical social emotional skills, such as empathy, cooperation, and problem-solving strategies.

Indoor/Outdoor Learning Environments

In the early stages of life, children learn and develop best through play. Schools must provide indoor and outdoor learning environments such as centers and playgrounds. In Kindergarten, children must be allowed 1 hour to play in centers. Outdoor recess time is a requirement as well to increase motor skill development.

“A child’s life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.”

–Robert Heinlein

Family

A child’s learning and socialization are most influenced by their family since the family is the child’s primary social group. Families possess the responsibility of nurturing their children in order to maximize their potential to develop in a healthy and efficient manner. However, side effects of family stressors, such as divorce, work schedules and poverty can negatively impact a child’s development and hinder their learning progress.

It is important for the families of Kindergarteners to be involved in their education in order to provide assistance in the learning process. After all, a child not only learns in school, but in the home as well.

Why Are These Factors Important in Child Development?

Each of these factors mentioned are important in development. They work together to “connect the dots” in a child’s overall development. Therefore, it is important to provide children with opportunities in each of these categories to help them grow mentally and physically in order to achieve their maximum potential.
