TOPIC: Digital Identity Theft

The topic chosen by our group for this presentation is Digital Identity Theft. Digital Identity Theft is a

growing epidemic. It is a crime that occurs when an individual’s confidential information is stolen and

exploited from a fraudster. An individual’s stolen information could be used by a fraudster to gain credit

products, attaining government benefits, take over bank and social media accounts, etc. (Seghar &

Zukarnain, 2021)

APPROACH:

Our approach to this presentation is to first introduce our group and define our topic. Following this we will

look at the history of Digital Identity Theft. Then, we will explore how digital identity theft occurs. We also

think that it is important to mention the laws placed to protect our identity and the punishments for suspects

of digital identity theft. We will include this information from the website

https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/annualstatutes/2009_28/FullText.html. (SOMEONE CITE THIS) This

information will advise us to educate ourselves and our peers on keeping information confidential as

possible. We will also provide facts and statistics of digital identity theft. We will take a look at a case study

of a Roman Seleznev, a Russian digital identity theft suspect (Galford, 2017). Following this we will look at

additional prominent cases of digital identity theft. One of them will be provided in a video called Online

Identity Victim: Digital thief stole my face about a fraudster who stole a man’s digital identity to con women.

(CNN, 2015). This video is from the website CNN. We will conclude our presentation by exploring

preventions of being a victim of digital identity theft. Finally, we will end our presentation with a discussion

question that asks is the internet really safe and should we continue using it?
