An important skill you will need upon entering English 1A is the ability to identify the purpose and

audience of college-level essays. You need this skill because you will be required to adjust your writing— the information provided, the tone, the emphasis—to your purpose and audience.

Then, suppose your English 1A instructor asks you to write a paper on immigration reform. Who might

be interested in reading a paper on such a topic? Come up with at least two target audiences for this

paper.

Finally, take a look at the two advertisements on the next page and determine the purpose and

audience for each. Be sure to say why you made this determination, noting the advertisements’ slogan,

product advertised, and other criteria you thought was important.
