Dimensions

Japan

United States

Performance Orientation

4.22 This score is in the middle of the cultural dimensions. While Japan values training and development, they scored a bit lower than the United States. According to Grovewell, the average was 4.10, which is very close to Japan’s score.

4.49

In the US, they scored higher, which shows the US’s competitiveness and materialistic views. America expects direct, explicit communication and values what one does more than who a person is.

Institutional Collectivism

5.19

Japan is a culture that focuses on group loyalty, members are highly interdependent with the organization. Rewards are given by senirority, and within group equity

4.2

United States has a lower collectivism score and the economic system tends to maximize the interests of indiciduals. Critical decisions are made on your own.

Gender Egalitarianism

3.19 Japan has lower gender equality, which means fewer women in positions of power, a lower level of female education, and little or no decision making in community affairs.

3.34

America fared only slightly better in this, and lower gender equality cultures have more occupational sex segregation. Not surprisingly, gender equality is also associated with participative leadership.

Uncertainty Avoidance

4.07 I was surprised that Japan scored lower on this than America, considering how refined and uptight can seem in movies and media. The average was 4.16, so Japan isn’t too low. A lower uncertain avoidance can show moderate resistance to change, less calculating when taking a risk and being informal in interactions

4.15 A higher uncertainty avoidance has a society that uses formality in interactions with others, an orderly culture with meticulous records, and relying on formalized policies and procedures.

In Group Collectivism

4.63

Japan has higher in-group collectivism, and love is assigned little weight in marriage. Duties and obligations are high determining factors in Japanese culture.

4.28 The US has a lower in group collectivism than Japan, which emphasizes rationality in behavior and a faster pace of life.

Future Orientation

4.29 Japan scored relatively high, and societies that focus on future orientation emphasize working for long term success, and material success and spiritual fulfillment is integrated as a whole

4.15 United States prefers gratification as soon as possible, and view material success and spiritual satisfaction as separate, requiring trade-offs.

Humane Orientation

4.3 has a middle score and has an interest in the needs of others, people are motivated primarily by a need for belonging and affiliation.

4.17 US scored a bit lower, closer to the average score, and people are not sensitive to all forms of racial discrimination. People are motivated primarily by a need for power and material possessions.

Assertiveness

3.59 has a low assertiveness score and values cooperation and warm relationships. Communicates delicately and indirectly to “save face” and also expects subordinates to be loyal

4.55 A higher assertive society like the US values competition, success, and progress and tries to have control over the environment. The subordinates need to take the initiative and prefer direct communication.

Power Distance

5.11 Japan is close to the higher end of power distance, society is separated by class, and it is harder for upward social mobility. Information is localized and hoarded, and societies that value power distance are self-protective.

4.88

The United States has a large middle class, and it goes without needing detail that cultures with a lower power distance have power linked to corruption and coercion. Information is widely shared, and there can be easier chances for moving upwards.
