Are you a Leader? What is a Leader? Vs What is a Manager?

7

Leadership

What attributes do leaders share?

They are united by perseverance in the search for an objective, the flexibility to determine the best way to achieve it.

The courage to make a difficult decision, and the confidence to maintain it and explain it.

Common sense to listen to others and make them participate.

And the strength to accept when you're wrong or when a certain policy is not working.

Leadership

There are too many attributes to mention, so I will refer to a few.

Nelson Mandela and Isaac Rabin were great for the reasons I mentioned and more.

Helmut Kohl oversaw the reunification of Germany, the European Union and the creation of the eurozone.

Bill and Melinda Gates have built their extraordinary foundation, which is saving and improving countless lives, driven by the principle that all lives have equal value.

They selflessly give their money, time and knowledge to help solve health and development problems worldwide.

The intention to introduce the topic of leadership with the interview of Bill Clinton is related to the concern to know what a leader thinks about" being a Leader".

We highlight his definition of leadership, considering it one of the most complete.

Leadership

The key aspects shared by most of the great leaders:

vision of the future

passion and

committed followers

In the business world we find examples of leaders such as

Steve Jobs, who saw the potential power of the personal speaker before many others;

Henry Ford, realized the potential to standardize production systems to bring a car to every American home;

Bill Gates, saw the power to graphically standardize the interaction of the individual with the computer.

There are innumerable anecdotes about the influence of leaders in different fields, hence the emergence, at the beginning of the last century, of scientific studies on leadership.

From the field of the company, from the Second World War, the study on organizational leadership became more important.

Discover Henry Ford’s Quotes on Leadership!

Organizing:

It means ordering resources, because these are not unlimited.

The functions of each one and the execution of responsibilities are defined; the programs are established and explained to the team; the budget for each program is determined; the necessary resources are allocated, especially money, people and time.

Leading:

It means driving people.

This directive function demands:

Informing about the objectives and the established policy to achieve them.-

Motivating and trying to make team members willing for themselves to achieve the objectives of the unit.-

Providing, train and assist.

Facilitating the necessary training and assistance, share authority through delegation, provide adequate conditions for your workers, etc.

Leadership

Controlling:

To control your team properly you have to

establish a forecast;

execute the planned;

control what has been done;

diagnose the causes and

make a corrective decision if the cause or previous causes are negative.

The control must be seen as an aid, an information for all your team, so that it can be improved day after day, to correct deviations from the team and to make new decisions.

17

Leadership key skills

To direct people and a team, you have to know how to carry out a series of skills that, if carried out correctly, will lead to team success.

These skills must be performed by the leader or team leader, and are the following:

Lead

Motivate

Communicate

Delegate

Conduct meetings

18

Leadership key skills

Successful Leaders have to…

…adapt to local cultural styles and ways of doing business!

19

As for the leader, he can exercise different types of power. Coercive power: It is based on fear or punishment. Power of connection: Based on the leader's nections with important people within the company or outside. Power of reward: It is based on the gratification to the team. Power of legitimacy: Based on the formal position of the leader; his appointment. Power of relationship: It is based on the leader's charisma, in his personal relationship with the members of his team. Power of information: Based on what the leader usually has and that others need. Power of the expert: It is based on the knowledge and skills of the leader.

Types of Power

20

Power

AUTHORITY. BOSS LEADER
Ability to force someone to do our will. Obligation.- It comes from fear.- Product of an individual goal.- Art of getting people to voluntarily do what you want. It has to do with the person. There is an act of will. It comes from respect. Product of a goal as a whole.

A style is a distinct way of behaving. A style may be strongly influenced and perhaps determined by the personality of the leader and/or of the situation in which the leader is leading his or her people.

A model is a structure which contains process or logic or a framework, which can be used or applied like a tool, in performing, understanding and teaching leadership. A model may contain measurable elements or standards enabling consistent evaluation

A philosophy is a way of thinking and believing. It's a set of values and beliefs. It is a compass or a foundation upon which processes, decisions, actions, plans, etc., can be built, developed and applied. It connects leadership with morality and ethics. It will be influenced by beliefs about human nature and society, and perhaps religion and a sense of ‘natural’ justice.

Leadership Styles (Daniel Goldman)

Affiliative: value of people rather than achieving goal

Pros: positive feedback to followers; sense of belonging

Cons: ineffective in complex challenges; lack of correction to under- performers

Autocratic: “dictatorship”

Pros: Effective in times of stress; action- orientated

Cons: one-way communication; unilateral decisions; unplanned feedback

Authoritative: mobilizes people toward a clear vision

Pros: empowers followers; positive impact on operating culture

Cons: dependent on expert followers

Charismatic: "use personal magic to inspire others"

Pros: visualizes future through metaphor & stories; followers share vision and move quickly

Cons: not all staff follow vision; can be undermined by negative reports

Coaching: "helps others to advance their skills"

Pros: plenty of feedback; staff know what is expected

Cons: Takes a lot of time and patience

NB: Styles are based on ‘Models’ and ‘Philosophies’,

but can be changed / adapted according to circumstances
