History of architecture
In this case study, I choose two buildings which are both Gothic Churches. Gothic buildings and Gothic style were described as barbaric and traditional style, but after the 12th century, Gothic architecture, as a new architectural form full of Christian mysticism. It became popular in the European and became a kind of elegant and noble architectural form, which was been widely used.
The first Gothic church I choose is The Cathedral of Cologne (Kölner Dom). The Cathedral of Cologne, located in the centre of Cologne, Germany, is the largest cathedral in Germany, also known as St. Peter's Cathedral. The main part is 135 meters high. (1) There are two minarets in this church. The two minarets stand like sharp sword in the sky. So far, the Cathedral of Cologne is the third tallest Church in the world.
The second Gothic church I choose is the Amiens cathedral. Gothic cathedral located in the historic city of Amiens, France, in the Somme River valley north of Paris. It is the largest of the three great Gothic cathedrals built in France during the 13th century, and it remains the largest in France. (2)
I choose these two churches because the cathedral of Cologne was built by the reference of the Amiens cathedral. They have many similarities but also have many differences.
Cologne Amiens
From the floor plans, The shape between two churches are seem very similar. They were both built by using the Latin cross plan. They both have the nave with aisles and a transept that forms the arms of the cross. They both have geometric shape except the Apse. There are the 7-half circle to become Apse in the east of the churches. Similar chancels, using 4 nave blocks and a half circle to become the chancel.
The difference between two churches is the narthex. The Cathedral of Cologne has a more complex narthex than Amiens cathedral.
