CYBERCRIME: AN ISSUE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT

Gilberto Cabrera

University of Maryland Global Campus

INTRODUCTION

According to Peha (2007), law enforcement agencies in the United States report a high number of cybercrimes than physical crimes.

Generally, cybercrime is a broad term that describes activities that are facilitated or conducted through the use of computer technology.

According to Johnson (2018), thousands of US citizens are victims of cyber-attacks every year

CYBERCRIME AS AN ISSUE

Cases of call center data leaks and fraud have been report in different parts of the world.

Cybercriminals attack US citizens by hacking into their laptops to gain access to their credit card and Social Security numbers.

The issue of overlapping jurisdiction creates a challenge for law enforcement agencies to investigate cyber-attacks (Dix, 2017).

Also, local police departments are equipped with few cyber specialists and judges do not have sufficient expertise on cybercrime cases.

ANALYSIS OF THE ISSUE

In the past, criminals would access an individual’s data by conducting some form of robbery.

However, in the current world, the criminal and the victim do not have to be in physical contact.

The issue sustains itself due to the availability of basic equipment to commit crime and also overreliance on computers and the internet.

Communication, leadership, and training are the core public safety concepts that relates to the issue (Oberman, 2014).

RECOMMENDATIONS

Engaging law enforcement during cyber-attacks.

Providing law enforcement with support and new resources to deal with cybercrimes.

Restructuring the internet by creating digital safe zones as a way of enhancing security.

Creating a joint and integrated public-private partnership that encourages information sharing, analysis, and collaboration.

implement a comprehensive cybersecurity education campaign that will help in raising awareness among the public (Dix, 2017).

CONCLUSION

Cybercrime is an issue to law enforcement as thousands of US citizens become victims of cyber-attacks every year.

The issue sustains itself due to overreliance of computers and the availability of basic equipment need to commit crime.

Some of the recommendations to the issue include raising awareness, creating safe digital zones, engaging law enforcement, and providing police departments the support and resources needed to deal with cybercrime.
