Announcements
NORC at the University of Chicago announces that Rene Bautista, Ph.D., has been selected as the next Director of the General Social Survey (GSS), upon Tom W. Smith's planned retirement in August, 2019. Dr. Smith will continue to serve as the GSS Director through the completion of the current grant, with Dr. Bautista serving as co-Director.
Dr. Bautista is a Senior Research Scientist in NORC's Statistics and Methodology Department, with substantial experience developing and implementing major NORC and other surveys, as well as leading methodological research over the past decade. Dr. Bautista, who earned his Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has published scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals and books, and is a frequent presenter in major national and international conferences on survey methodology. He holds an academic appointment as affiliate faculty at the University of Chicago Harris Graduate School of Public Policy and at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Survey Research and Methodology Program, and serves as Associate Editor of Public Opinion Quarterly, the flagship journal of the American Association for Public Opinion Research.

How can I get GSS data?
GSS data may be obtained in several ways. Besides accessing GSS data from this site, customized subsets of GSS data may be downloaded online from the Survey Documentation and Analysis website at the University of California, Berkeley. CD-ROMs with GSS data may be ordered from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research using RoperExpress and from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), if your institution is a member.
If you are interested in acquiring either the GSS panel data from 2006-2014 or any of the General Social Survey-National Death Index linked data sets, those are only available through the GSS website, and can be found on the Get the Data page in either SPSS or Stata formats.
In what years is the GSS conducted?
The GSS was first conducted in 1972. Until 1994, it was conducted almost annually (due to funding limitations, there were no GSSs in 1979, 1981, or 1992). Since 1994, the GSS has been conducted in even numbered years.
When will the next GSS data be available?
GSS data are archived about six months after data collection is completed.

Although there have been notable ESOP failures, such as at the Tribune Company and United Airlines, overall ESOPs have been strikingly successful. The General Social Survey reports that employee owners are one-third to one-fourth as likely to be laid off as employees who are not in these plans.
