Differing Research Viewpoints (DRV) Table

GERO 100 6980 Contemporary Issues in Aging (2208) TG

In brief:

Using the references you previously identified and reviewed, you will compile a research

table and a compare/contrast summary on your identified topic in aging with regard to

three (3) differing research perspectives.

This assignment is the last of three (3) sequential research assignments in this course: 1)

Building Your Essay; 2) Historical and Contemporary Perspectives Research Essay; and

3) Differing Research Viewpoints Table.

This assignment requires you to examine the interdisciplinary nature of gerontology. In

the study of aging, the training and perspectives of the researchers whose work we read

always color our understanding. Psychologists, for example, typically examine how aging

influences the functioning of the individual; sociologists examine how aging impacts

group processes, and anthropologists might seek to understand the meaning of aging

from a cultural perspective.

You will reexamine your previously gathered academic, peer-reviewed sources to create a

table. The Differing Research Viewpoints Table assignment must include: a table,

compare/contrast summary, and a discussion board post – detailed below.

First, the table portion will:

Represent a minimum of three (3) different perspectives (e.g. psychological,

sociological, economic, political, legal, anthropological, medical, etc.)

Identify research articles that represent each perspective (minimum of two (2) per

perspective for a total of six (6) distinct articles)

Identify the important or key findings of each study/article (provide in bulleted

format)

Brief blank example:

Topic: (Brief description of your topic of interest – one phrase or sentence)

Compare/Contrast Summary: Next, describe how your three different perspectives on

your topic in aging compare and contrast with one another (at least three points). Note

that you should discuss how the perspectives themselves compare and contrast as

opposed to a discussion of how the different articles compare and contrast.

The table and compare/contrast summary will be submitted as a combined Word

document, utilizing APA format styling and including a reference list, via the Assignments

folder in the LEO classroom. Please note that .JPG, .PNG, and .ODT files are not

appropriate; all submissions will be reviewed by TurnItIn for academic integrity review.

Before submission, carefully review the rubric provided to ensure you have addressed all

important aspects of the Differing Research Viewpoints Table assignment. Additional

research resources are also available within the LEO classroom.

Lastly, for the discussion board portion of this assignment you will:

Post your Differing Research Viewpoints Table assignment (including the

compare/contrast summary) to the appropriate discussion board in Week 6

Read and respond substantively to what at least two (2) of your peers post with

respect to this assignment in Week 7

You will copy and paste your table and compare/contrast summary into the appropriate

discussion board, as opposed to attaching it as an attachment file. Many UMGC students,

including your peers in this course, rely on intermittent Internet and attachments will thus

be very difficult to view (as they require downloading).

Your Differing Research Viewpoints Table assignment will be graded according to the

detailed grading rubric below:
