Goal 5: Analyze the landscape of your home town

Using the same USGS web page, type in the name or zip code of your home town. Zoom into the area around your home and post a screenshot below (use Print-Screen, then Control-V. Be sure to crop down to just the map so the instructor can't see your other open browser tabs!)

1. Describe the general landscape around your home based on the topographic map patterns you see. Are there hills? Are there valleys? Or is it mostly flat?

2. Where is the highest elevation area near where you live? Symbolize it on your screen shot with a star. How high is it?

3. Where is the lowest elevation area near where you live? Symbolize it with circle How low is it?

4. What is the topographic relief of your home town?

Goal 6: Analyze the landscape of a volcano

Using the same USGS web page, type in 'Mount St Helens WA'.

1. Describe the general shape of the current volcano. Does it have a crater now?

2. What is the highest elevation you can find by placing map pins around the current volcano?

Use the list of historical topo maps on the right hand menu to select any version from before the 1980 eruption. Click on the "Show" icon and the map view should change to that time.

3. Describe the general shape of the volcano from the time period you have selected.

4. Is there anything else different about the volcano on your older map?

5. What is the highest elevation you can find on the volcano previous to its 1980 eruption?
