DB Forum 2: Identity and Communication
COLLAPSE
In the contextual logic of communication as described by Stewart (2012), essential to understanding the conveyance of other thoughts and ideas comes from the construction of identities such as co-constructing selves. This represents the message sender and receiver engaged in dialogue with a series of tasks essential to provide understanding of one another’s references made in conversation (p. 73).
Additionally, the abstract of the communication for the interface of interpersonal communication is described as multidimensional. Meaning, that not all communication is one in the same, as cultural references, behaviors, mannerisms, and geographical locations, all play a factor in establishing the interface of communication (Stewart, 2012).
Stewart (2012) describes the definition of identity as “identity is made up of interlocking features that mark how persons behave and respond to others. Identities are constellations of labels that establish social expectations that we have of ourselves and others. These social expectations can include roles that we want or have to play in specific situations and the languages or dialects we speak and expect others to speak” (pg. 77).
For example, cultural diversity has their own colloquialisms when interaction is achieved and the multidimension aspects can include region, cultural identity, and familiarity (Stewart, 2012). As for the other multidimensional approach can also include language, dialect, and syntax. In this sense, an example can include a person from Cuba who communicates in Spanish to another Hispanic person from maybe, Mexico, may have a difference in their language syntax due to the regional differences. Same language, however, different dialect can cause a communication hindrance. The following of the four characteristics of self as identified by Stewart (2012) are:
1 Identities are multidimensional and changing
2 Selves are responders
3 Identities are developed in past and present relationships
4 Identities can be avowed and ascribed
Otherwise, communications are a collectively diverse ideogram of meanings and contextual phrases with included body languages and inaugural areas of cultural diversity specific to regional or communal identities of persons engaged in dialogue. Additionally, the communication is confirmed as active and reflective listening through probing and the review questions asked by the communicator.
