RESEARCH ESSAY ON SWEDEN
GEOG 207: RESEARCH PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
SWEDEN
This project consists of two stages – assignments with deadlines:
Overview of the assignment:
· Write a 5 to 6 page paper [1400-1600 words/ APA or MLA format] in the form of some kind of travel brochure, guide or research paper (the exact nature of this document is up to the student, as long as it fulfills the purpose of the assignment), written for U.S. citizens who are unfamiliar about a particular region of the world but who are going to travel there for some reason (the exact reason, as well as the region to be covered, is also up to the students – such as study abroad, business, mission service, honeymoon). What the student must cover in this travel guide or research paper include: current economic and political climate, major religions and customs, how Americans are perceived in this country, and anything else a prospective U.S. traveler should know. U.S. topics will not be approved.
· This project will require fieldwork – using the library, the Internet, etc. Sources must be cited in the body of the paper/brochure.
· Why a paper or brochure? Students will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of inquiry and writing. Reading is also a significant part of any project. Students selecting a topic must include at least six sources; three must be primary sources (diaries, speeches, autobiographies, news media articles, government documents, etc.) on which they will base the paper, or travel brochure/guide. Please do not cite the online encyclopedias Wikipedia, Britannica, etc; or similar general information sites (such as ask.com or about.com). It is advisable to avoid using web sites that end in the suffixes “.com,” or “.net” altogether (conversely those ending in “.gov”, “.org” or “.edu” are more acceptable) It is strongly recommended that you make use of journal articles, government documents, newspapers, magazines, and books accessible through Ivy Tech Library’s Discover!
· Consider this project as an important reflection of your expertise and interest in the topic.
· Ultimately each student is responsible to submit the paper in a clear, concise and compelling manner. Try enhancing your paper/brochure with “art” [photos, maps, etc.]
