Genogram and Ecomap Assignment Guidelines

Purpose

The purpose of developing and analyzing a family genogram and ecomap are to assist students in:

· learning a key skill in a comprehensive assessment of a family

· learning how to map the relationships within a family, and the relationships between a family and others

· learning to assess the health of a family as a system

Directions

Using a case study as an example of a family, you will construct a Genogram and Ecomap using the following instructions:

A. Family genogram (with key)

Develop a genogram according to the guidelines in Chapter 26 in the Stanhope and Lancaster Public Health Nursing text book.

· Three generations depicted

· Occupations identified

· Level of education if available

· Current or previous health status identified

· Cause of death if available

· Significant life events (e.g., marriages, divorces, separations, etc)

· Relationships diagrammed

· Ages identified

B. Eco-map (with key)

Refer to chapter 26 (Fig.26.8) in the Stanhope and Lancaster book for Ecomap format. Identify key sources of support. Use connecting lines to illustrate the nature and quality of the relationships, and direction of the flow of energy. You may also include supports which the family feels may no longer be helpful or relevant. These may include but are not limited to:

· Family

· Friends

· Affiliations (memberships)

· Employers

· Professionals

C. Analysis and summary

In narrative format discuss the following:

· What stage of the family life cycle are the Johnsons at? What family developmental tasks are evident in the case study?

· What are genetic tendencies that you’ve identified?

· Using the skills of motivational interviewing, provide a brief summary of how you would counsel the Johnsons on health-related risks.

· What conclusions can you draw from analysis of the genogram and ecomap related to family strengths and support systems? Are there vulnerabilities? If so, how could they be addressed?

D. Quality of Genogram and Ecomap
