Character Analysis

For your Character Analysis, choose ONE of the three topics listed below:

1. In Robert Browning’s poem, My Last Duchess, the Duke finds himself in search of a new wife. Is the Duke an evil, misogynistic tyrant or is he a forlorn widower in need of a suitable marriage?

2. Compare and contrast the narrators of Matthew Arnold’s poem, Dover Beach, and Andrew Marvell’s poem, To His Coy Mistress. What does each want? How does he/she go about persuading his audience?

3. In Dylan Thomas’ poem, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, how does the narrator feel about his father’s impending death?

Remember that a Character Analysis is not merely listing and explaining different character traits, but a justification of a single statement about a character. A listing of character traits may be an appropriate way to justify a statement, but a discussion of the character’s growth or change may be better. Depending on the character, a discussion of central incidents, objects, or quotations that reveal or cause a primary characteristic may be best of all. Be sure to check every statement for relevance.

Your 2-3 page, 600-750 word paper should be typed, double-spaced in font no larger than 12 point. Your paper should include a heading that includes your name, class, time and title. Follow standard MLA formatting conventions and adhere to formal academic standards for language (no first or second person).

A Works Cited page is not necessary for this analysis. However, you must cite all quotations using MLA documentation.
