General Paper Guidelines In addition to the specific guidelines for the particular paper you have selected, please closely review these general requirements for all papers. While your discussion board posts are more conversational in nature, papers should be approached as more formal, academic writing. Style Guidelines
• Length must be between 1500–2000 words, unless otherwise noted in the specific assignment (i.e., only 500–750 for the Observation Papers).
• Papers must be double spaced with 1-inch margins and 12-point Times New Roman font. • Papers should follow APA guidelines, which include a cover page, page numbers, a
running header, and a source page entitled “References.” Do not, however, include an APA abstract. It is not required and will not count toward your word total.
• In-text sources and corresponding end references must be cited in APA style. Do not identify your instructor as the author of the lectures. These are written and delivered by Jennifer Linde, one of your textbook editors/authors.
Here are some relevant examples of proper APA citation style:
References (at end of essay)
Textbook with editors: Linde, J. A., & Edson, B. A. (Eds.). (2019). The process of gender (4th ed.). Dubuque, IA: Kendall Hunt.
Article in textbook with editors: Wood, Julia T. (2019). Monsters and victims: Male felons’ accounts of intimate partner violence. In J. A.
Linde & B. A. Edson (Eds.), The process of gender (4th ed., pp. 165–180). Dubuque, IA: Kendall Hunt. (Original work published 2004)
PowerPoint lecture slides with author/narrator: Linde, J. (2019). Lecture 4.1: The men’s movement [PowerPoint slides].
In-text citations (at end of sentence)
(Wood, 2004/2019, p. 174). Page number required with in-text citation only for direct quotation, not for paraphrase of summary. The only sentence period follows the citation.
(Linde, 2019, Lec. 4.1). For further queries about APA style, see the video tutorial on our Canvas site. There are also a number of helpful APA websites such as the following:

• Be sure to closely read all the assignment directions and the grading rubric, which explains the weight given to each component in the assessment.
• Write in the first person when discussing your own experiences or expressing an opinion. • Use traditional essay format. This includes an introduction with a thesis
statement, a body of the essay in paragraph form, and a conclusion. Paragraphs should be standard length (at least 1/3rd page, at most 2/3rds page).
• Paraphrasing material allows you to maintain your own voice and style while demonstrating mastery of another’s material. Paraphrased content still requires a citation, however. For direct quotes, use at most two to three, and limit the length to one sentence. Please review this helpful
site on APA style that distinguishes between these two methods and provides examples of proper citation format for both: https://guides.library.nymc.edu/c.php?g=567729&p=3914572
• Proofread your paper for spelling, grammar, and citation errors. Submission Guidelines
• All papers must be posted using the appropriate link in the Submit Papers Here Module in Canvas no later than 11:59 pm on the day indicated in the course schedule. See the course syllabus for the policy on late papers.
• Your paper will be checked with anti-plagiarism software, so be very careful about citing sources. See ASU guidelines on plagiarism, and you can read more about avoiding this problem here:
