Wealth disparity is not just an issue about the ability to earn an income and provide the basic necessities of life of food and shelter, but wealth disparity in the United States and around the world has a direct impact on individual’s health and well being, establishing it a medical issue as well.

For those who are struggling with low paying jobs and incomes and few options to be able to change their careers, there are studies that have proven the correlation in increased sick days from work and missed work days due to psychosomatic illnesses and mental illnesses such as depression. Access to goods and services based on income levels extends far beyond the retail world, and well into the world of basic services like medical care and food choices. By approaching the wealth disparity as more of a medical issue, instead of just a financial issue, people can take more ownership of the responsibilities that individuals have wherever they are at currently, and see that their health may depend on their own ability to make a sacrifice to improve their options and education levels. What was surprising was this rate of increased sick days from work as well as increases in self-reported health issues were not just among the ethnic minorities, but along generally lower socioeconomic classes period. Taking care of oneself should not be limited to a specified minimum income level. Better decisions with the income that one has, as well as the initiative and responsibility to change one’s status if you aren’t where you want to be by means of training and education, and even relocating to an area with more opportunities if necessary.
