Assignment Overview:

This individual research project is an opportunity for you to assemble the various disciplinary approaches applied in the course and to use your knowledge to critically evaluate a range of works in an academic essay to illustrate a theme of your choice

Overall aim:

To research a personally chosen theme and appraise a range of art forms and genres from various perspectives including historical and cultural context and setting, supporting your opinions with arguments relating to artistic identity, aesthetics and influences on the creative process. The project reinforces academic skills and good practice to complement academic research projects in the core curriculum

Learning outcomes:

1. Examine a range of materials, compare and contrast interpretations

2. Discuss various forms of aesthetic expression, presenting arguments relating to historical, cultural and social context

3. Evaluate and criticize a variety of works from a range of genres with a view to presenting a structured, cohesive argument

Organization and methodology:

The chosen theme should be thoroughly analyzed in a detailed paper offering the reader a context for the theme in aesthetic terms as well as an appraisal of the influence of other disciplines on artistic representations of the theme.

A range of art forms and genres should be offered as examples and critically analysed for their role in the public perception of the theme. You should choose 3 art forms to analyse and illustrate your chosen theme.

A detailed plan should be presented class in the week preceding the final submission date. Your outline should include the intended structure of your essay and the main points explored in the paper with references included. Feedback will be given to students.

1. Evidence of an understanding of the chosen theme as it is represented in a variety of art

forms and genres, presented in its historical and cultural context, appropriately referenced (30%)

2. Critical analysis of the artistic values and impact of the works given to illustrate the aesthetic expression of the chosen theme supported by appropriate references sources (20%)

3. Communicating effectively in writing, using appropriate academic tone, effective structure following appropriate academic conventions, language accuracy (30%)

4. Correct and appropriate APA referencing demonstrating individual research (in-text and reference list (20%)
