Mastery Journal Threaded Research

The MJTR assignment is designed to help students finalize the direction for the research they will complete through the remainder of the degree. This research topic should be not only of personal interest to the student, but an innovative take on a topic that clearly offers some insight or benefit to the Game, VR/AR, or Simulation industries.

It is important to remember that this topic must be supported by valid, reliable research. Where industry-specific research can be found, use it, but always think about what can be added to that discussion. In addition, be sure to consider related fields of research that can be successfully applied to the topic. The latter is often a way to offer innovative new tools or techniques to the industry.

Include a title page, cite sources throughout, and provide a reference page at the end.

Identification of Topic

· State research topic

· Explain innovative quality

· Explain relevance/potential contribution to the industry

· Connect to career goals

Feasibility Analysis

Follow the template below to substantiate the availability of valid, reliable research on the topic.

· Research summary

· Full bibliography of sources consulted to this point (minimum 8). Complete the following for each source:

· 2-3 sentence summary of research content

· Intention to use (will the article be used as a source or not? Why?)

· Label with the following categories:

· Empirical (peer-reviewed with study or studies)

· Literature review (multiple studies consulted/evaluated)

· Industry Expert (GDC talk, Gamasutra article)

· Industry Novice (blogs, opinion pieces)

· In-text citation (name, date) wherever content is paraphrased or quoted.

· Future Research Identification

· Give a 1-sentence summary to identify each of a minimum of five new pieces of research (not from the bibliography above) to consult in the coming months. Include a hyperlink to the research listed. At least two of these must be empirical in nature. Note, if there are less than 8 pieces in the bibliography, add the comparable number of new sources to even that out.

· Mentor identification

· Identify two mentors who will help direct the research. One of the mentors must be a member of GDMS faculty.
