Hello everyone,
The three group models that we are discussing in this week’s topic all function in different ways and have different goals in mind. The social goals model focuses primarily on socially determined interests, and the desired outcome is social gains for each member of the group. These goals are primarily generally utilized in community issues and are evident in groups such as parent-teacher associations and community watch groups (Farley et al., 2011).
The second group work model discussed this week would be remedial goals. The groups that would primarily utilize remedial goals would be groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous due to the fact that it is clinically oriented and is best utilized as a model of treatment. It is the purpose of these types of groups to build interaction within the group in order to bring about change in each individual’s life. By building these positive relationships within the group, each individual will ultimately build new functioning methods around others and develop new outlooks on life in general (Farley et al., 2011).
The third group work model stands out among the three in that it incorporates the individual as well as society. Reciprocal goals view individuals as a product of their environment, meaning that the social circles and the environment around them mold their relationships, social interactions, and the interdependency between the individual and society. The social worker working in these groups will primarily focus on the intersection of the systematic relationship between the individual and society (Farley et al., 2011).
The primary difference between the three group models is the intended outcome and benefiting from the group. If the group is intended to bring about social change in a community, the group should utilize social goals. If the focus is to benefit the individuals in the group, the goals that should be utilized are remedial. While reciprocal goals may benefit both the individual and society.
