Introduction

Mercy is a kind of instinct that differentiates a human being from an animal in terms of behavior. The concept of mercy is known globally by people but its significance is not only limited to human behavior. Mercy has been hugely interrelated with religious principles such as ideologies of the Bible. The purpose of this essay is to measure the vision required for mercy from both religious and non-religious perspectives. Subsequently, the critical analysis of mercy fulfills the objective of this study to attain the mindset required for avoiding someone’s mistake or even sin willingly.

Critical analysis of mercy on the basis of historical event

The greatness of mercy can be understood from the historical event that happened during the time of the king ruler. Once upon time, a young man was caught by the soldiers of great ruler Napoleon for committing a crime. The mother of the accused young men had approached the King and asked for mercy. Napoleon said that her son is not worthy to have pardon from his side (bible.org, 2021). In reply, the mother said that she would not have asked for mercy if her son deserved it. Finally, Napoleon spared the young men on the request of his mother.

The story conveys a very important fact about mercy and it is called toughness or difficulty. It is true that every individual can have mercy on someone else but it becomes difficult for the person when the person has to grant mercy. The above story also justifies that implication of mercy is possible only when an individual stops oneself from imposing logic behind the wrong deed conducted by the accused person. A person has to overcome that psychological barrier of logic that has been inherited by society, people and education and start thinking about human life and its valuation.

Conceptualisation of mercy on the basis of Bible

The term ‘mercy’ has been conceptualized in different ways according to the situation and perception possessed by people. Generally, mercy is outlined in social context by evaluating the human action toward another human being. However, the concept of mercy gets little modified by the scholars when they incorporate religion or theory of the Bible. A term often heard “god mercy and judgement” is the reflection of the bible that indicates or describes the grace of god due to his mercy on all the creatures living on this planet (bible.org, 2021). Hence, it can be said that mercy has been outlined to give pardon on behalf of God to the millions of spirits living in this world. In other words, a new dimension of mercy has been found from the Bible and it can be termed as spiritual mercy implemented on every creature of the universe (study.com, 2021).

Scholar John Calvin mentioned the situation when Mary called God as her savior. In the meantime, the author also reveals about the fact that humans always search for happiness rather than knowing about God. Subsequently, it has been proved that the whole human community of the world can be considered as sinful creatures. On the other hand, God never stops oneself from giving his grace on the human community even after it does not deserve it. It justified the fact that God accepts human sin and never keeps humans away from the right thing which must be understood in the broader scope.

The concept of the Bible for mercy also conveys the necessity of possessing the highest realm or position in order to become eligible for giving mercy to its followers or comes under the same hierarchy. However, the difference created between the spiritual mercy by God from the socialistic mercy when God mercy also comprises love and faithfulness.

Theories of mercy

Theory of mercy often appears to be positive when scholars describe the historical event or merely conduct an evaluation of mercy in the socialistic context. From the mythological or spiritual perspective, Murphy Law has been criticized for what it meant in the context of mercy (bible.org, 2021). Therefore, scholars interpreted the murphy instead of mercy to signify the pathetic situation of an individual due to the pessimistic environment created in one’s life. Subsequently, the aforementioned approach of mercy outlined a new concept in a pessimistic way that defines the negative aspects of life surrounded by the person who is asking for mercy. Grace and mercy sometimes use interchangeably while considering the theory of Bible and mentioning of God but grace is used for undeserving and mercy has been used for relief.

Conclusion

From the above analysis, it has been concluded that mercy is a phenomenon which comprises the state of mind of an influential person granting mercy to the other side of the accused person. The evaluation of mercy through this study reveals the necessity of logic that contradicts the deeds of the accused one and completely avoids the sinful act in order to grant mercy.
