Final University Seminar Essay (FUSE) Assignment
What is the FUSE?
The FUSE is a 6-7 page research paper written by all students in House and USem 103.
Why is the FUSE required?
The purpose of researching and writing the FUSE is to deepen your knowledge of a topic or issue, in order to develop an informed opinion and make a convincing argument that helps readers understand the issue in a new way. The research essay is an essential form of writing necessary for success in many college courses. Beyond college, this is the kind of writing that can make people sit up and take notice, or even take action on an issue.
Who will read my paper?
The immediate audience for this essay is your peers and instructor. Beyond this class, however, a well-written FUSE could become a SOAR presentation, spark your future Capstone research, or even become the basis of an article for publication. So your finished writing should convey confidence and authority.
What are the basic guidelines?
· Length: 1500-1750 words (6-7 pages)
· Double-spaced, 1” margins, 12-point font
· Incorporates at least five relevant scholarly and/or peer-reviewed sources
· Accurately uses MLA or APA formatting, including in-text citations and a list of sources at the end (not part of overall word count)
· Includes a title
What is the general process of writing the FUSE?
1. Choose a topic or issue that is related to the course theme or focus, AND is important and interesting to you personally.
2. Choose relevant, credible sources (if appropriate, build on your previous research in 102, and do more research and reading as needed).
3. Plan your essay. What do you want to say about this topic? (It will help to summarize your sources, and think about how they relate to each other.)
4. Draft your essay. Construct a strong claim, support it with relevant evidence from your sources, and provide strong reasoning (explain how the evidence supports your claim).
5. Revise your essay, taking into consideration feedback from peers or instructor. (Multiple revisions will help you further develop ideas; clarify points; improve overall organization, clarify transitions between paragraphs, arrange sentences logically within paragraphs, etc.)
6. Edit and proofread with careful attention to word choice and standard conventions of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and documentation of sources (in-text and works cited).
How will my FUSE be evaluated?
The FUSE will be evaluated by your instructor using the USem FUSE scoring guide. Your essay will be evaluated in three areas of skill: written communication, critical thinking, and information literacy.
How much does the FUSE count?
The final FUSE essay itself is worth approximately 25% of your overall course grade, with another 25% in process pieces. This term paper is almost 50% of your course grade.
