As future embalmers it is very important that we have a good grasp on the vascular system of the body. This week we will be talking about the circulatory system and specifically the arteries. In order to actually learn this and understand the many components, please draw out or diagram a very detailed description of the arteries from the left ventricle throughout the entire body. I do not not care how you go about this, but it must have all the main parts and popular branches that we talk about. YOU CAN NOT COPY AND PASTE AND IMAGIE. It must be your own work. Keep this drawing for your studying purposes and throughout your embalming career.

We utilize the blood vascular system every time we perform an embalming. This is one of the most important bodily structures that we need for our future careers. I want you do a little research and explain to your fellow classmates conditions that may affect the arteries and how we as embalmers may have to overcome these challenges.

Mutiple conditions can affect the circulatory system. This will require critical thinking to address the issue and find effective ways to achieve a thorough embalming to meet the needs of the family and meet the goals of embalming. Complications could result in purging, increased edema, your fluids exiting as drainage rather than treating the body and of course uneven distribution of the chemicals. One condition is an Aneurysm, which is an artery wall that has weakened and caused a large bulge in the artery. Worse is that an aneurysm could rupture which is a medical emergency and can be fatal. They are most commonly developed in the brain, aorta or abdomen. A ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm also known as AAA, can significantly impair the distribution of your chemicals. This can result in restricted injection sites. More than likely a single injection site would not be likely to achieve adequate embalming results. Mutiple point injection would be required as with several arterial diseases due to the blockage or damage. Extreme facial edema and sclerotic arteries are to be expected with an aortic aneurysm. It is recommended to inject slowly with a strong solution and additional dye may need to be used to monitor and trace the distribution. If you are not getting adequate drainage and the abdomen begins to swell, then you should stop injecting immediately. At this point you would have to begin multipoint injections or hypodermic embalming each section of the body individually which can be lengthy and tasking but necessary to achieve embalming.

You will need to do this assignment on the skull diagram provided and upload it into Moodle as a PDF only.

I hope you start working on this early! You will need to use the provided powerpoints to act as an aid in labeling this project.

You do not need to be an artist, just pay attention to detail. I would recommend drawing all muscles using colored pencils. Just make sure you pay attention to the striation of the muscles (the direction the muscles run). Some muscles may lie beneath/underneath others, so also be aware of this. Take your time with this assignment.

Week 6 Discussion Forum

In this forum you'll be doing a mini-writing assignment. Your task is as follows:

1. Pick ONE muscle from chapter 3 (Muscles of Form and Expression) and tell us all about it.  

2. Provide the name, what it does, what it looks like, how it acts, the movement it creates, and anything else you would like to share.  INCLUDE A PHOTOGRAPH of the facial/cranial muscle you chose.

3. Do NOT copy word for word from the textbook, but instead paraphrase it in your own words so that a middle-school student could understand it. 

4. Bring in NEW information not in our textbook. A good place to start would be your favorite search engine. Type in the name of your muscle and you'll find all sorts of information regarding trauma and repair, diseases that affect the muscle, etc. Please include an APA citation for any outside sources, and include your sources at the bottom of your post.

You are not required to reply to a classmate this week, but feel free to contribute if you have information that will be helpful.
