“From the Bottom Up” Paper Instructions

You will write a 5-page paper on the general theme of “from the bottom up.” This paper should take the form of an article for a Chinese periodical, The China Critic, published any year from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. For this “article,” you should draw on reports/articles in the Chinese press of that time, e.g., The North China Herald, The Recorder, The China Weekly Review. You should focus on a non-elite group, such as beggars, rickshaw pullers, prostitutes, nightsoil collectors, or factory workers.

English-language newspapers published in China are available online through the UCSC library. To access them, go to “library databases” on the library website. Then click on “News and Newspapers databases,” and then click on “Chinese Historical Newspapers” (ProQuest Historical Newspapers: Chinese Newspapers Collection, https://search-proquest-com.oca.ucsc.edu/hnpchinesecollection/advanced) or “China: Trade, Politics and Culture (http://www.china.amdigital.co.uk.oca.ucsc.edu/)” Type in a topic, e.g., beggars, rickshaw pullers, etc. For the adventuresome, try “Policing the Shanghai International Settlement, 1894-1945” (police reports from the British municipal police force in Shanghai), in Archives Unbound on the library databases site: http://go.galegroup.com.oca.ucsc.edu/gdsc/i.do?action=interpret&id=3FGP&v=2.1&u=ucsantacruz&it=aboutCollections&p=GDSC&sw=w&authCount=1

Note: If you prefer to use articles from a Chinese newspaper such as Shen Bao, you are welcome to do so. However, for your paper, including quotes from those articles, must be written in English!

Although there is not a required number of articles you should use, a minimum of three is a good guideline.

It is not required, but may be helpful to browse scholarly works on the group you are writing about. These can be found through the library websites, such as Google Scholar, JSTOR, or Project Muse.

Keep in mind that the essay should take the form of an article/report for a magazine published at the time. Be sure to specify a title for your report, and the date it would be published.
