Italian Influence on French Renaissance

u The Italian Renaissance spread Northward to French and England. u The Renaissance period in Italy occurred between the 14th and 16th

centuries. u This era was marked by significant transformations in the region u It involved the regeneration and rebuilding of a specific social role

with significant advances in science, literature, music and arts and philosophy.

Ideas of the Italian Renaissance

u The Italian Renaissance was based on the idea of restoring the country’s ways to their level best.

u The Italian culture was the focal element in the entire process u The Renaissance period was basically built on ways to enhance the

Italian culture and apply it for further development of the nation. u This rebirth spread Northward to France, which also emphasized the

need to embrace the French culture and using it to improve the country’s economy.

u Due to its proven efficacy in Italy, France used the ideas of Renaissance to enhance its citizens’ lives.

Effects of the Italian Renaissance on France

u France witnessed a lot of changes through borrowing the Renaissance ideas from Italy.

u French language improved along with performance art. u The country’s economy and literature was boosted u Renaissance caused numerous positive implications that were felt

by other countries in Europe such as French and England that they also embraced to improve their citizens’ lives.

Early and High Renaissance of France

u The High Renaissance involves a short period of exceptional artistic production in the Italian States.

u Similar to Italy, three phases are evident until the start of the 17th century, First and Second French Renaissance ending with Mannerism.

u The style of Louis XVI-Louis Quatorze Style marked the style of high Classical period in France under the rule of Louis XIV, from 1643-1715.

u The period was characterized by unique architecture, furniture and decoration culminating in the building of the Palace of Versailles.

Motifs and Furnishings of French Baroque

u Baroque Style was witnessed in the period between 1643-1700 that was marked by the golden age.

u It occurred during the reigns of Louis XIV, 1643-1715.

u It was the first of the purely native styles that was characterized by:

v splendor and magnificence

v use of classic architectural orders

v rectangular wooden wall paneling

v enormous rooms

v large-scale furniture

v The style featured richly carved ornamentation and strong color contrasts with curves formed by the compass.
