Analysis of quotes in the Frankenstein story
“I will not attempt to console you; but will simply relate the circumstances of the transaction.”
The above statement is made in a letter to Frankenstein from his father. Initially the father was to inform Frankenstein on the day that he should come home on the letter, however, the father has a different message that he is to share; William is dead. The father in the statement states that he is not going to attempt to console Frankenstein; rather he is going to share what led or what transpired in William’s death (Shelley, 2018). The father is aware that it might be impossible to console him via a letter but is aware that giving the details of William’s death will go a long way in answering the many questions that Frankenstein might have as regards the death of the young boy.
This particular statement to Frankenstein really stands out for me as I can resonate with Frankenstein’s likely pain. I can only imagine what is going on in his mind as he reads the letter most definitely because he was expecting a different message. I feel that receiving horrible information, more so information on the death of a loved one via a letter can be a hard thing to take in. I am pretty sure that, Frankenstein had so many questions; questions that I would have if I was the one receiving the news of the death of a loved one.
The purpose of the statement is basically to indicate to Frankenstein that the questions he has will be answered in the next few lines. The father is aware that consolation is not a priority as of the moment, rather the information on the details of the death are. The following lines after the father’s statement seem to answer questions that might have been crossing Frankenstein’s mind. Questions like what happened? How is everyone taking it? How is mother taking it? Am I needed immediately?
