“The raising of ghosts or devils was a promise liberally accorded by my favorite authors, the fulfillment of which I most eagerly sought” (Shelley, 1818, p.30). From the line, Victor Frankenstein is the narrator who describes how his life would eventually turn out to be in the future. Again, the line reveals the connections of Frankenstein’s experiment to the existing debate between champions of materialistic science and proponents of the received religion. Further, the way Frankenstein’s encounters affect his life path and direct him towards a course enabled him to achieve his goals is the same approach this line stands for me. In real life, I can relate to Frankenstein's case with how life occurrence adversely affected major decisions I made.
Accordingly, this line makes me feel depressed as I remember about the past challenges I have faced in life. One of the major changes in Frankenstein’s life is the death of his mother who succumbs to scarlet fevers which relate to my life happenings where I lost one of my relative from cancer. I had to make bold decisions on how I was going to survive without him just like in the case of Frankenstein when he leaves to go and study Science and Philosophy and sets a goal of creating life and renewing it where death has taken life (Shelley, 1818). Conversely, this implies how misfortunes such as the death of loved ones and in some cases occurrences that are not tragic may completely change a person’s decisions.
Consequently, the purpose of this line is to show how misfortunes in life may awaken either philosophical or religious arguments within a person as is the case of Frankenstein. This internal conflict within oneself may be the driving force that pushes a person to accomplish fits that have not been achieved by anyone and have been proven to be difficult which makes this, in fact, the main source of Frankenstein's motivation. The main purpose of this line used by the author is to enlighten the reader’s on how life experiences together with already existing philosophical and religious knowledge may drive an individual to accomplish the unachievable in order to try and solve their problems in life.
