Final paper structure suggestions

Introduction: What are co-occurring disorders/co-morbid conditions? Do you think counselors need special training or understanding to work with co-occurring conditions? Why is advocacy important for clients with dual disorders?

Thought 1: Why is it important for you as a future counselor to be ethics bound? Why is important to be guided by ethics while dealing with clients who have co-occurring disorders? What role does advocacy and ethics play for these group of clients? Do these go hand in hand? Or does advocacy compromise ethics and vice versa?

Thought 2: Talk about two or three typical examples of dual disorders such as…. if a client is prescribed painkillers for their physically disabling condition and they start abusing pain meds...then what does counseling ethics say? Do you advocate for not prescribing pain meds to the client...even when they need those meds? Or do you plan it differently?

1. With each example make sure that you talk about your ethical position as a counselor.

2. How will you advocate for such a client? 3. What are some of the problems in dealing with such issues that may create ethical

or advocacy problems?

Thought 3: What does Code of Counseling ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors say? I have provided you the link of this codebook. In addition, you can also consult codebook for counseling psychologists and APA’s code on ethics. You can search if they say anything specific about co-occurring conditions. If they don’t talk about these group of clients specifically, then why not?

Conclusion: summarize and ask further questions about this issue that came out of literature that you consulted.
